If you are raising a dart frog through metamorphosis, one of the first practical questions is also one of the most important: what size food can this frog actually eat?
The usual progression sounds simple. A newly metamorphosed frog starts on springtails, moves onto Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies and, if it belongs to a larger species, eventually graduates to Drosophila hydei. Healthy adults may also be offered very small crickets or carefully selected mini waxworms as occasional dietary variety.
In practice, the changeovers are not controlled by a fixed number of days. I have raised froglets that attacked melanogaster almost as soon as their tails disappeared, while others of a similar age needed a dense supply of springtails before they hunted confidently. Species makes a difference, but so do the froglet’s individual size, mouth width, body condition, coordination and confidence.

The short answer: Newly metamorphosed dart frogs should have access to abundant springtails, commonly around 0.3–2 mm depending on species and age. Introduce dusted D. melanogaster, usually about 2–3 mm long, when the froglet is hunting confidently. Larger Dendrobates, Phyllobates, Ameerega and similar frogs can later take 3–4.5 mm D. hydei. Small genera such as Ranitomeya may remain on springtails and melanogaster for life.

The measurements below are practical ranges, not guarantees printed on a packet. Size varies with feeder species, sex, age, culture temperature, nutrition and supplier. In a mixed-age springtail culture or a tub of mini waxworms, select the individuals that suit the frog in front of you.

Important: prey length is only part of the decision. Width, hardness, speed and shape matter too. A long, soft, narrow larva may be physically easier to swallow than a shorter but broad, hard-bodied insect. The table is therefore a starting point, not permission to feed every item within a quoted range.
The Frog Decides When It Is Ready—not the Calendar
Age ranges are useful for planning cultures, but I would never move a froglet onto larger food simply because it is six weeks old. Metamorphosis does not produce identical animals. Even siblings can leave the water at different sizes and develop at different rates.
A traditional screening rule is to avoid prey wider than the space between the frog’s eyes. That is a useful emergency check, but it is not enough on its own. With dart frogs, I also watch what happens during the hunt.
Signs that a frog is ready to try the next feeder size
- It detects and pursues its current prey quickly.
- It catches most attempts rather than repeatedly striking and missing.
- It swallows the prey promptly without prolonged manipulation.
- It remains active after feeding rather than appearing distressed or repeatedly wiping its mouth.
- Its body condition and growth are steady.
- It is not being outcompeted by larger siblings or tank-mates.
Signs that the prey is too large—or the transition is too early
- The frog watches the prey but will not strike.
- It strikes repeatedly but cannot secure the insect.
- It catches the feeder and then spits it out.
- Swallowing takes unusually long or causes obvious struggling.
- The frog ignores larger feeders and begins losing condition because smaller food is no longer being supplied.
If that happens, step back a size. It is not a failure and there is no benefit in forcing the issue. Keep offering the proven smaller feeder and try a few larger prey again after another week or two.
Stage 1: Tail Absorption and the First Food on Land
A tadpole completing metamorphosis still has energy stored in its tail. While the tail is being absorbed, many froglets show little or no interest in terrestrial food. I do not try to force food into them. I make sure suitable micro-prey is already present so that the first meal is available as soon as hunting begins.
For most dart frogs, springtails are the safest first food. A productive culture contains adults and much smaller juveniles, giving the froglet a range of prey sizes. They also remain active within damp leaf litter and around small pieces of cork, creating repeated hunting opportunities without the froglet having to cross an exposed grow-out tub.
This is especially important with tiny Ranitomeya froglets. A newly morphed Ranitomeya may be physically capable of catching a melanogaster, but a dense population of small springtails gives it many more easy successes while it learns to hunt.
Springtails should be established before the froglet needs them. A newly purchased culture is not a feeding plan unless it is genuinely productive. I keep feeder cultures outside the enclosure as insurance and seed the grow-out environment in advance. Should springtails be dusted?
Springtails are awkward supplement carriers. They are tiny, often harvested with moisture and do not hold powder as predictably as a dry fruit fly. A light coating can be attempted where the harvesting method allows it, but I do not rely on springtails alone to deliver a complete supplementation programme.
That is one reason I introduce dusted melanogaster as soon as the froglet can handle them. Feeding springtails well and maintaining a healthy microfauna culture matters, but “gut loading” does not make a balanced dusting routine unnecessary.
Stage 2: Introducing Drosophila melanogaster
Drosophila melanogaster is the small fruit fly used as the staple bridge between springtails and larger feeders. Adults are generally around 2–3 mm long, although females, males and flies raised under different culture conditions will not all be identical.
Larger Dendrobates froglets may take melanogaster almost immediately after coming onto land. Smaller froglets may need several days or a couple of weeks. I introduce only a small number at first, while continuing to supply springtails. That overlap is important: it lets you test capability without turning the test into a period of underfeeding.
Once you see repeated, clean captures, melanogaster can become the main visible feeder. Springtails should remain available in the background. They provide smaller prey, encourage natural foraging and act as useful insurance between fruit fly feeds.
Every fruit fly feed must be supplemented
Fruit flies are a captive staple, not a nutritionally complete animal by themselves. Tap the number you intend to feed into a clean cup, add a small amount of appropriate supplement, swirl gently until the flies are lightly and evenly coated, and feed them immediately. Do not prepare dusted flies hours in advance: movement and grooming remove powder.

If you use another supplementation system, follow that manufacturer’s schedule rather than combining several complete products and accidentally doubling fat-soluble vitamins. Strong cultures also matter. Flies raised on poor, exhausted or inconsistent media are still poor feeders even after dusting. Stage 3: When to Move from Melanogaster to Drosophila hydei
Drosophila hydei is noticeably larger and heavier than melanogaster. Adults are commonly around 3–4.5 mm long. The difference may sound small on a ruler, but it is meaningful to a juvenile dart frog because hydei is also broader and more substantial.
For larger Dendrobates, including many tinctorius, auratus and leucomelas, hydei becomes an efficient adult staple. Larger Phyllobates, Ameerega and some Epipedobates also take it readily. Depending on the species and individual, I might trial a few hydei from roughly six to twelve weeks after metamorphosis, but I treat that as an observation window rather than a deadline.
Start by adding a few dusted hydei to an ordinary melanogaster feed. If the juvenile takes them cleanly, increase the proportion gradually. If it ignores them or struggles, continue melanogaster and retry later. There is no nutritional prize for getting onto hydei early.
Nor does “moving up” mean melanogaster becomes unsuitable. Adults can still eat smaller flies, and using both sizes can promote longer foraging. Hydei simply gives a larger frog more food per successful strike.
Ranitomeya and Other Small Dart Frogs May Never Need Hydei
The springtail-to-melanogaster-to-hydei sequence describes many larger dart frogs, but it should not be presented as a universal ladder.
Ranitomeya are the clearest example. Their froglets are tiny and their adults remain small. Many are best kept on springtails and dusted melanogaster permanently. Some individual adults may take small hydei, but there is no husbandry requirement to make them do so. A reliable smaller feeder that the frog catches cleanly is better than a theoretically more substantial feeder it regularly refuses.
The same caution applies to smaller Oophaga and any unusually small or recently compromised individual. Choose prey for the animal, not simply the genus written on the label.
Occasional Variety for Adult Dart Frogs
Fruit flies remain the practical staple for most captive dart frogs, but suitable adults can occasionally receive other feeders. Variety should add enrichment without displacing the dependable, supplemented core of the diet.
Micro or pinhead crickets
Very small house crickets, approximately 2–4 mm, can be offered to larger adult dart frogs. Retail terms such as “micro”, “pinhead” and “first instar” are not perfectly standardised, so look at the insects rather than trusting the label.
I offer only a few at a time, lightly dusted, and watch them being taken. Crickets grow quickly, hide exceptionally well and can become inappropriate if left in the vivarium. Do not tip in a large number and assume the frogs will find them all.
Mini waxworms
Waxworms are soft-bodied and readily accepted, but they are rich food. Newly hatched greater wax moth larvae begin at roughly 1–3 mm and grow towards 25–30 mm, which shows why the word “mini” is not enough. A tub can contain a wide size range, and a full-grown waxworm is wholly unsuitable for a dart frog.
For a larger healthy adult, I would select a genuinely small, narrow larva—commonly around 3–8 mm—and offer it only occasionally. Think of mini waxworms as a treat or a carefully controlled calorie boost, not a weekly staple and never a substitute for properly dusted flies.
A Practical Transition Plan After Metamorphosis
- Before the froglet leaves the water: prepare a mature grow-out setup, seed it with springtails and make sure your external springtail and melanogaster cultures are producing.
- While the tail is being absorbed: minimise disturbance. Keep tiny springtails available, but do not panic if the froglet does not hunt immediately.
- During the first days on land: confirm that you can see the froglet tracking and taking springtails. Offer prey daily and monitor the frog rather than counting what disappears into the substrate.
- Once hunting is coordinated: add a small number of freshly dusted melanogaster while continuing springtails.
- After repeated successful melanogaster feeds: make melanogaster the staple visible feeder, with springtails continuing as background micro-prey.
- For a growing larger species: trial a few dusted hydei alongside melanogaster, commonly somewhere around 6–12 weeks on land but only when the frog’s size and hunting behaviour support it.
- For small species: keep using springtails and melanogaster for as long as they remain appropriate—including permanently for many Ranitomeya.
- For established larger adults: use appropriately dusted fruit flies as the foundation and add a few selected micro crickets or mini waxworms only for occasional variety.

Common Feeder-Size Mistakes
Replacing the smaller food too soon
Introducing a new feeder should mean overlap, not a hard switch. Keep the proven smaller prey available until you have watched the frog take the larger food repeatedly.
Confusing “can swallow” with “is appropriate”
A frog may eventually force down an oversized feeder, but that does not make it a good meal. Clean pursuit, capture and swallowing are the standard—not mere physical possibility.
Buying by trade name rather than measuring
“Micro cricket” and “mini waxworm” are sales descriptions, not precise biological stages. Compare the feeder with the frog before it goes into the vivarium.
Assuming Ranitomeya must graduate to hydei
They do not. Many small dart frogs thrive on springtails and correctly supplemented melanogaster throughout life.
Using prey variety as an excuse to neglect supplementation
Offering several feeder species does not automatically balance calcium, vitamin D3, vitamin A or other micronutrients. The reliable solution is a deliberate supplementation system.
Flooding a grow-out tub with flies
More food is not always better. Excess flies can stress a small froglet and make it difficult to judge consumption. Several controlled feeds and constant access to springtails are usually more useful than a mass release.

Move larger species towards hydei when their size and behaviour show that they are ready, while allowing Ranitomeya and other small frogs to remain on melanogaster permanently if that is what suits them.
The principle is straightforward: use the smallest feeder that supports confident, efficient hunting, then increase prey size gradually without removing the frog’s proven food supply. Growth is not a race. Reliable feeding, correct supplementation and careful observation matter far more than reaching the next feeder on an imaginary timetable.
