Feeding dart frogs looks simple until you are responsible for doing it properly.

Put some fruit flies into the vivarium, watch the frogs hunt and repeat. That is the basic process—but a reliable feeding system also depends on prey size, feeder quality, supplementation, frog age, group dynamics and whether the vivarium makes the frogs feel secure enough to feed.

There is no universally correct number of flies for every dart frog. A newly metamorphosed Ranitomeya, a growing Dendrobates tinctorius and an established breeding female do not have identical requirements. Even two frogs of the same species and age may feed differently.

This guide explains what captive dart frogs eat, how often to feed them, how much food to offer, how to dust fruit flies and how to judge whether your routine is actually working.

Quick answer: what and how often should dart frogs eat?

For most captive dart frogs in the UK, appropriately sized flightless fruit flies form the practical staple diet. Springtails are particularly valuable for newly metamorphosed froglets, small species and natural foraging within a mature bioactive vivarium.

  • Newly metamorphosed froglets: abundant springtails, followed by small dusted Drosophila melanogaster as soon as they can hunt them reliably.
  • Growing juveniles: small, controlled feeds daily or on most days, adjusted according to body condition and development.
  • Healthy adults: commonly fed four to six days per week, although species, condition, breeding activity and enclosure maturity all affect the right schedule.
  • Supplementation: dust suitable feeder insects immediately before feeding, following the directions for the supplement system you have chosen.
  • Quantity: feed enough to produce confident hunting without leaving the vivarium flooded with uneaten flies.

These are starting points, not rigid rules. The frog in front of you matters more than a feeding calendar copied from somebody else.

What do dart frogs eat?

Dart frogs are small, active insectivores. In captivity they need live prey that moves, triggers a hunting response and is small enough to be captured and swallowed cleanly.

The foods most commonly used by UK keepers are:

  • flightless Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies;
  • flightless Drosophila hydei fruit flies;
  • springtails;
  • microfauna living within established leaf litter;
  • carefully selected micro crickets for suitable larger frogs;
  • genuinely small waxworms as an occasional high-fat treat for appropriate adults.

Fruit flies are the practical staple for most collections. They are small, productive and easy to culture on a rolling basis. Springtails provide extremely useful micro-prey, but I do not normally rely on springtails alone as the complete long-term diet of a frog that can take supplemented fruit flies.

Microfauna living in leaf litter adds natural foraging opportunities, but it is difficult to measure what each frog consumes. Treat it as valuable background feeding and enrichment—not as a reason to stop providing a controlled staple diet.

Feeder variety can be useful, but variety does not automatically create nutritional balance. A deliberate supplementation routine remains necessary.

Choosing the correct prey size

A traditional check is to avoid prey wider than the space between the frog’s eyes. That is a useful conservative starting point, but it is not the entire decision.

Width, shape, hardness, speed and movement all affect whether a feeder is appropriate. A frog should be able to pursue, catch and swallow the prey without repeated misses, prolonged manipulation or obvious struggling.

Signs that a feeder is too large include:

  • watching the feeder but repeatedly refusing to strike;
  • striking without being able to secure it;
  • catching and then spitting out the prey;
  • taking an unusually long time to swallow;
  • repeated mouth wiping or apparent distress after capture.

If you are moving a growing frog onto larger food, introduce a few larger feeders alongside the proven smaller prey. Do not remove the food you know the frog can eat until you have watched it handle the new feeder repeatedly.

How much should you feed a dart frog?

I do not recommend a universal number of flies per frog. Numbers can create false confidence because a “fruit fly” is not a standard unit of nutrition.

A hydei is more substantial than a melanogaster. A breeding female may need more support than a lightly active adult male. A densely planted vivarium retains prey differently from a simple grow-out enclosure, and frogs kept in groups do not necessarily receive equal shares.

A better starting method is:

  1. Offer a modest quantity of freshly dusted, correctly sized prey.
  2. Spread it across accessible feeding surfaces.
  3. Watch which frogs hunt and which hang back.
  4. Check later for excessive uneaten prey.
  5. Adjust future feeds according to body condition, growth, breeding activity and what remains in the enclosure.

A good feed creates active hunting. It should not leave the enclosure crawling with large numbers of flies long after the frogs have stopped feeding.

With newly metamorphosed froglets, prey density matters differently. A tiny froglet needs frequent opportunities to encounter small food without crossing a large exposed area. That is why abundant springtails and carefully controlled fruit fly feeds are more useful than releasing one enormous batch of flies and hoping for the best.

Do not use deliberate fasting to compensate for poor food control, and do not reduce a growing froglet’s food simply because an adult schedule sounds tidier. Equally, adult frogs do not benefit from a vivarium being permanently overwhelmed with flies.

Watch trends over several feeds. One quieter day is not automatically a problem; a repeated change in appetite, weight or behaviour deserves investigation.

How to dust fruit flies for dart frogs

Captive feeder insects should not be assumed to provide a complete mineral and vitamin profile by themselves. Dusting is how we deliberately improve the nutritional package delivered with each feed.

What “lightly dusted” actually means

The flies should carry a visible, fine and reasonably even coating. They should not be buried in a mound of powder or left sitting in so much supplement that they can barely move.


My practical method is:

  1. Tap the number of flies you intend to use into a clean, dry feeding cup.
  2. Add a small amount of the chosen supplement.
  3. Gently swirl or tap the cup until the flies are evenly coated.
  4. Feed immediately.
  5. Discard contaminated leftover powder rather than returning it to the container.

Do not dust flies hours in advance. Movement and grooming gradually remove powder, while moisture can make it clump.

I use Frogfather All-in-1 Vitamin & Mineral Dust lightly as my chosen feeding system. If you use a different system, follow its manufacturer’s schedule. Do not casually combine several complete supplements, because doubling up can make the total intake of fat-soluble vitamins difficult to judge.

Fruit fly quality and culture nutrition

Supplement dust is not a magic repair for a weak feeder culture.

Fruit fly cultures should be productive, active and managed on a rolling basis so that one failure does not leave the frogs without food. Old, exhausted, overheated, dried or contaminated cultures can produce poorly and make feeding unnecessarily unreliable.

Good culture practice includes:

  • starting replacement cultures before the current ones decline;
  • keeping more than one age of culture running;
  • protecting cultures from excessive heat and direct sunlight;
  • using clean equipment and sensible hygiene;
  • watching for mites, mould, drying and unusual smells;
  • maintaining backup springtail cultures.

What the insects are raised on also affects the feeder itself. I use Fruit Fly Feast for my rolling cultures, but good culture media complements dusting—it does not replace supplementation.

Feeding froglets, juveniles and adults

Newly metamorphosed froglets

As a froglet finishes absorbing its tail, it may not feed immediately. I make sure small springtails are already present rather than trying to force the first meal.

Once it begins hunting, the priorities are:

  • small prey it can capture cleanly;
  • frequent access to food;
  • dense but controlled springtail populations;
  • an early introduction to dusted melanogaster when appropriate;
  • low stress and plenty of cover;
  • close observation of the individual froglet.

A productive mixed springtail culture can provide a useful spread of sizes. Maintain cultures outside the enclosure as well as seeding the grow-out setup; the population inside a vivarium is not a dependable backup on its own.

Growing juveniles

Juveniles are growing quickly and usually need feeding daily or on most days. They should not simply be treated as small adults.

Watch for differences within a group. One juvenile may grow quickly because it is taking the majority of the food while a sibling feeds slowly or waits until the enclosure is quiet. Similar starting sizes do not guarantee similar access.

Healthy adults

Established adults are commonly fed four to six days per week, adjusted according to the species, body condition, temperature, activity and whether they are breeding.

Larger adults may handle hydei efficiently, while small species such as many Ranitomeya can remain on melanogaster and springtails throughout life. There is no prize for moving a frog onto larger prey if it hunts smaller food more successfully.

Breeding females

Egg production places additional demands on a female, but “breeding” should not become an excuse for uncontrolled feeding. Support the frog with regular, properly supplemented prey while continuing to assess her condition, behaviour and recovery between clutches.

Group feeding and hidden competition

Competition does not always look like fighting. A bold frog may occupy the best feeding position every time while a quieter animal stays behind cover. The group appears to be feeding, but the food is not being divided evenly.

To reduce hidden competition:

  • release prey in more than one part of the enclosure;
  • use several accessible feeding surfaces;
  • provide leaf litter, planting and visual barriers;
  • observe identifiable individuals rather than the group as a whole;
  • avoid keeping inappropriate group sizes or combinations;
  • separate an animal that is consistently losing condition or being excluded.

Signs your feeding routine is working

The best measure is not how quickly food disappears. It is the condition and behaviour of the frogs over time.

Reassuring signs

  • frogs notice and pursue food readily;
  • prey is caught and swallowed cleanly;
  • body condition remains stable;
  • juveniles show steady development;
  • all frogs in a group have opportunities to feed;
  • only small numbers of feeders remain after the main feeding period;
  • normal activity continues after feeding.

Warning signs

  • repeated refusal of previously accepted prey;
  • visible loss of condition;
  • uneven growth within a juvenile group;
  • one frog feeding while another consistently remains hidden;
  • repeated failed strikes or difficulty swallowing;
  • large numbers of uneaten flies remaining in the enclosure;
  • lethargy, weakness, poor coordination or abnormal posture.

Body condition is more useful than one isolated meal. Photographs taken from consistent angles can help you notice gradual changes that are difficult to see from memory alone.

What should you do when a dart frog is not eating?

Do not assume the answer is simply more food or a different supplement.

Appetite can change because of:

  • recent transport or rehousing;
  • prey that is too large;
  • poor-quality feeder cultures;
  • incorrect or unstable temperature;
  • insufficient cover and security;
  • group competition;
  • overwhelming numbers of feeder insects;
  • dehydration or wider husbandry problems;
  • injury, parasites or illness.

If a frog is losing condition, appears weak, cannot coordinate its movements or shows another physical abnormality, contact an experienced exotics veterinary surgeon. An article cannot diagnose an unwell amphibian.

Can dart frogs be overfed?

Yes, although the most immediate problem is often overfeeding the enclosure rather than watching a frog consume one enormous meal.

Too many uneaten flies can:

  • continually crawl over and disturb the frogs;
  • make it difficult to judge what has been eaten;
  • increase waste within the enclosure;
  • collect around fruit or other improvised feeding points;
  • create poor hygiene in an immature or unbalanced setup.

A mature bioactive vivarium provides some resilience, but springtails and isopods are not a licence to release uncontrolled quantities of food.

If an adult is carrying excessive condition, adjust the feeding routine gradually and assess the whole setup. Do not impose a severe diet on a frog based on a photograph or a generic target weight.

Example dart frog feeding routines

These examples are starting frameworks, not prescriptions. Quantities still need to be adjusted by observation.

Newly metamorphosed froglet

  • Maintain abundant appropriately sized springtails in the grow-out environment.
  • Check daily for feeding behaviour and condition.
  • Introduce a small number of freshly dusted melanogaster when the froglet is hunting confidently.
  • Continue springtails during the transition.

Growing larger-species juvenile

  • Offer dusted melanogaster daily or on most days.
  • Spread feeders to reduce competition.
  • Trial a few dusted hydei alongside melanogaster only when captures are clean and confident.
  • Review growth and body condition each week.

Healthy established adult group

  • Begin with controlled feeds on approximately four to six days per week.
  • Use the fruit fly species appropriate to the frogs.
  • Dust immediately before feeding.
  • Release food across more than one area.
  • Adjust the next feed according to remaining prey and individual body condition.

The routine should be consistent enough to prevent gaps in nutrition, but flexible enough to respond to the actual animals.

What the scientific evidence can—and cannot—tell us

Detailed nutrient requirements have not been established for every dart frog species, life stage and breeding condition. That means nobody should pretend there is a scientifically proven universal number of fruit flies or a perfect schedule that applies to every frog.

Research does, however, support several important principles:

  • Published nutrient analyses demonstrate that feeder insects differ in nutritional composition and should not automatically be considered complete or interchangeable. See Finke’s nutrient analysis of feeder insects.
  • Experimental work has shown that dusting can substantially alter the calcium delivered by feeder insects. That particular study used crickets rather than fruit flies, so it supports the principle of prompt, controlled dusting—not an exact fruit-fly dosage.   • A study of captive Oophaga pumilio found that carotenoid supplementation affected reproductive outcomes under the study conditions. It should not be treated as a universal dosing instruction for every species. Read the primary research paper.
  • Research on Ranitomeya imitator has found differences in colour-related gene expression and pigmentation between carotenoid/retinol-enriched and deficient experimental diets. This shows that micronutrient availability matters; it does not mean that adding ever more vitamin A or carotenoids is safer. See the 2025 experimental study.
  • Wild poison frogs obtain defensive alkaloids from particular dietary arthropods, including mites. Standard captive fruit fly and springtail diets are not attempts to reproduce that chemical defence. See Saporito and colleagues’ research on dietary alkaloid sources.

Scientific research provides useful boundaries and mechanisms. The day-to-day schedule still has to be adjusted through careful observation, reliable record-keeping and experience with the species being kept.

Can dart frogs eat waxworms?

Suitable larger adults can receive genuinely small waxworms occasionally. Waxworms are high-fat food, not a staple, and retail descriptions such as “mini” do not guarantee that every larva is an appropriate size.

Why is my dart frog suddenly refusing food?

Possible causes include stress, recent transport, unsuitable prey size, incorrect temperature, insufficient cover, group competition, poor feeder quality or illness. Repeated refusal accompanied by weight loss, weakness or abnormal behaviour requires prompt investigation and potentially veterinary attention.

Are captive-bred dart frogs poisonous?

Captive-bred dart frogs maintained on standard cultured feeders are not considered toxic in the way wild frogs consuming particular alkaloid-bearing arthropods can be. Do not collect random wild insects in an attempt to recreate a wild diet; they may introduce pesticides, parasites or unsuitable prey.

What actually matters

A dependable dart frog feeding system is built from several ordinary things done consistently well:

  • appropriately sized live prey;
  • strong rolling feeder cultures;
  • fresh, controlled supplement dusting;
  • feeding frequency matched to the frog’s life stage;
  • enough cover and security for confident hunting;
  • more than one feeding point in group enclosures;
  • regular observation of individual body condition.

Do not chase a perfect fly count or change the entire feeding system because one frog has a quiet day. Build a reliable routine, watch the frogs and investigate patterns rather than isolated moments.
