Ultimate Bioactive Vivarium Bundle – Tropical Leaf Litter, Microfauna Support & Clay Feeding Dish

Bioactive bundle with tropical leaf litter, microfauna support food and a reusable clay/feeding dish.

A practical collection of components rather than a guaranteed self-sustaining ecosystem. The clay dish is optional and is not presented as a proven mineral requirement for dart frogs.

Description

Ultimate Bioactive Vivarium Bundle – Leaf Litter, Microfauna Support & Clay Dish

A convenient bundle of components commonly used in planted bioactive vivaria. It is designed to help establish structural leaf litter, support microfauna and provide a defined dish that can be used for feeding or, if desired, an optional clay area.

What’s included

  • Tropical leaf litter (approx. 100g) – a mixed botanical layer providing cover, structure and decomposing organic material.
  • Microfauna support food – supplementary food for established springtail/microfauna cultures; use sparingly to avoid excess mould or waste.
  • Clay dish – a controlled dish that can be used as a feeding zone or for an optional clay preparation.

What a bioactive system still needs

No bundle makes a vivarium automatically “self-sustaining”. Successful bioactive husbandry still depends on suitable substrate, drainage where required, ventilation, moisture management, live plants, appropriate microfauna populations, feeding and routine observation/maintenance.

Leaf litter

Leaf litter can provide cover and foraging structure while contributing organic material to the detritivore system as it breaks down. Longevity varies with leaf species, moisture, microfauna and enclosure conditions. We have removed the earlier claim that tropical leaves are inherently “better than UK leaves”; suitability depends on the material and how it is prepared and used.

Clay dish

The included dish can be used as a feeding area. If used with natural clay, treat that as an optional husbandry feature. We do not claim it supports a proven “natural mineral intake behaviour” or that captive dart frogs require access to clay.

Frogfather practice

This combination reflects components we commonly use in bioactive systems. It is a practical starting bundle rather than a scientifically validated complete ecosystem.

Husbandry & Evidence Review

Last reviewed: 5 September 2026

Amphibian skin is physiologically important and permeable to water, electrolytes and many dissolved compounds. That does not establish a therapeutic benefit from bentonite or other clay baths. We therefore distinguish Frogfather’s optional use of clay from evidence-based medical or nutritional treatment.
