Tropical Yellow Springtails – Live Bioactive Culture
A live yellow springtail culture for warm, humid culture systems and suitable bioactive vivariums. Supplied with food to help establish or maintain the colony.
Uses
- Contribute to decomposition by grazing microbial/fungal growth and decaying organic material.
- Add visible microfauna activity to planted enclosures.
- May provide occasional very small live prey for suitable froglets and micro-predators.
We no longer call springtails an “essential” clean-up crew or claim they create a stable ecosystem on their own. Their contribution depends on the springtail type, population, substrate, moisture, temperature and the amount and type of organic material present.
Care
Keep the culture appropriately moist, feed sparingly and allow it to establish before harvesting heavily. Live-culture density naturally varies. Avoid overfeeding and retain a backup culture if you rely on regular harvesting.
When introduced to a vivarium, continue normal enclosure maintenance and remove excessive uneaten food or accumulated waste where necessary.

Springtails are part of terrestrial decomposer food webs. Many species feed on fungi, microbes and decaying organic material, and microarthropods can contribute to decomposition. Their exact diet and ecological effect vary among taxa and conditions, so Frogfather does not describe a springtail culture as a complete waste-removal system or a guarantee of a stable, self-sustaining vivarium.
Bioactive enclosures still require observation, suitable substrate and leaf litter, moisture and ventilation management, animal feeding, plant care and removal of uneaten food or accumulated waste when necessary.
