Slow-Release Fruit Fly Feeder for Dart Frogs
A reusable release lid that fits a suitable established fruit-fly culture and allows newly emerging adult flies to enter the vivarium gradually.
What it does
The device can provide an additional trickle of live prey over time when paired with a productive culture. Release rate depends on fly species, culture age, temperature, media condition and how many adults are emerging.
Important welfare correction
We previously said this system would keep frogs fed for up to 15 days, worked “just like daily feeding”, and meant there was no need to rely on another person while away. Those claims have been removed.
A slow-release feeder does not confirm how many flies reach the enclosure, whether each frog eats enough, whether supplements remain available, or whether misting, temperature, water, equipment and animal health remain normal. It should therefore be treated as a backup or supplementary feeding device, not a replacement for appropriate animal-care arrangements while you are away.
Before relying on it
- Test the exact culture, lid and enclosure for several days while you are present.
- Use a healthy producing culture and keep a backup culture available.
- Confirm that flies can exit but animals cannot enter or become trapped in the culture.
- Arrange for an appropriate person to check the animals and equipment during absences.
- Remember that a release device does not provide freshly dusted feeders at a controlled dose.
Frogfather experience
We have found gradual-release culture systems useful as an additional food source. Duration varies too much between cultures and conditions for us to guarantee a fixed number of days.
