• Organic material and feeding surfaces for detritivorous microfauna.
• A leaf texture that may break down at a different rate from other botanicals.
• Surface cover that can slow local evaporation from exposed substrate.

Claims corrected

We previously said guava leaves maintain a stable forest-floor environment, buffer humidity, prevent ecosystems becoming unstable, last significantly longer than local leaves and are automatically amphibian/reptile safe after professional treatment. Those claims were too absolute.

Leaf durability varies with species, batch, moisture, microbes and microfauna. Tropical origin does not automatically make a leaf longer-lasting than a suitable temperate leaf. Likewise, cleaning/treatment is not the same thing as toxicological proof of amphibian safety.

Preparation

Inspect and rinse/prepare the leaves before use as appropriate. Do not use material with suspicious residues, persistent chemical odour or heavy contamination. Replace/top up as the leaves decompose.
