Premium Bioactive Leaf Mix 200g – Long-Lasting Tropical Leaves for Vivariums & Terrariums

200g mixed leaf litter for larger bioactive vivariums and terrariums.

Provides floor cover and organic material for microfauna. We do not claim every batch is analytically “contaminant-free” or that it universally outlasts oak or other temperate leaves.

Description

Premium Bioactive Leaf Mix – 200g

A 200g mixed leaf-litter pack for larger planted vivariums, terrariums and invertebrate culture systems.

What it provides

  • Natural-looking floor structure and cover.
  • Organic material for detritivore and microbial decomposition.
  • Refuge surfaces for springtails and isopods.
  • A mixture of leaf types with different textures and breakdown rates.

Contaminant and durability wording corrected

Earlier copy described the leaves as “completely contaminant-free – no pesticides, no mould, and no hidden nasties” and as slower to degrade than oak. Unless supported by batch-specific analytical testing, “completely contaminant-free” is not a claim we should make. Likewise, decomposition speed varies among individual leaf species and conditions.

Frogfather supplies material selected and prepared for vivarium use, but keepers should still inspect it before introduction. If a particular batch shows visible mould, chemical odour or unusual residue, do not use it in an animal enclosure.

Bioactive use

Leaf litter can help support detritivore populations and reduce direct surface drying, but it does not by itself “regulate humidity” or make an ecosystem balanced. Use it as one component of a properly managed enclosure.

Leaf Litter & Evidence Review

Last reviewed: 5 September 2026

Leaf litter can provide cover, feeding surfaces for detritivores, organic material for decomposition and local moisture retention. Breakdown rate varies greatly between plant species, individual leaves and enclosure conditions.

Some Terminalia catappa extracts show antimicrobial activity in laboratory assays, but that does not establish that ordinary dried leaves in a frog vivarium prevent infection, suppress mould reliably or improve amphibian skin health. We therefore describe tannins and botanical use without turning in-vitro extract results into veterinary claims.
