Live Today: A Group of Neon Day Geckos
Live from Frogfather HQ – 7 October 2026
Today the Frogfather Live Cam is switching from frogs to one of the smallest and most striking members of the day gecko family:
a group of Neon Day Geckos (Phelsuma klemmeri).
This is a genuine, unscripted view into one of our established bioactive vivariums at Frogfather HQ in Nottingham.
There are no staged feeding shots or carefully selected clips – the camera simply runs and lets you watch the animals
going about their normal day.
What Are Neon Day Geckos?
The Neon Day Gecko, Phelsuma klemmeri, is a small diurnal gecko native to north-western Madagascar.
It is one of the smaller members of the genus Phelsuma and is immediately recognisable by its vivid colouration.
Adults typically have a bright yellow head contrasting with turquoise or blue-green colouration along the body,
often accompanied by darker markings along the sides. Despite their tiny size, they are visually spectacular animals.
Unlike many geckos that become active after dark, Phelsuma klemmeri is diurnal.
That means much of its natural behaviour takes place during daylight hours – making these geckos particularly interesting
animals to observe on a live camera.
Built for Climbing
Neon Day Geckos are highly arboreal. Their specialised adhesive toe pads allow them to move confidently across branches,
leaves, bamboo and even smooth vertical surfaces.
Watch the camera carefully and you may see them moving vertically through the enclosure, crossing apparently difficult
surfaces with very little effort or sitting almost motionless while surveying the vivarium around them.
Small Gecko, Fast Hunter
Phelsuma klemmeri may be small, but it is an active visual hunter. Much of the day can be spent watching the
surrounding environment for tiny invertebrate prey before suddenly moving to investigate or strike.
In a mature bioactive vivarium, this means there is often far more happening than simply waiting for a scheduled feeding.
Plants, microfauna and the structure of the enclosure create a constantly changing environment for the geckos to explore.
What You May See on the Live Camera
Depending on the time of day, you may see the geckos basking, climbing, hunting, exploring foliage, interacting with
one another or simply sitting still and watching their surroundings.
You may also see absolutely nothing for a while – and that is part of watching animals live rather than watching edited footage.
The geckos decide when they appear and what they do.
Why Keep Them in a Bioactive Vivarium?
A planted bioactive vivarium provides far more than an attractive backdrop. Plants, branches, vertical surfaces and
varied structure create opportunities for climbing, hiding, hunting and choosing between different positions within the enclosure.
The aim is not to create a display where the animal is permanently visible. Quite the opposite: a well-designed vivarium
should give its inhabitants the opportunity to move away, hide and choose where they feel most comfortable.
That can occasionally make live-streaming slightly frustrating – but it also means that when one of the geckos suddenly
appears on camera, you are watching behaviour on its terms rather than ours.
About Phelsuma klemmeri
Phelsuma klemmeri originates from a relatively restricted area of north-western Madagascar and is strongly associated
with vertical vegetation, particularly bamboo habitat.
Their slender build and climbing ability are beautifully suited to this type of environment. In captivity, providing plenty
of usable vertical structure, planting, cover and suitable basking opportunities allows them to make use of the enclosure
in three dimensions rather than simply occupying the floor.
A Different View from Frogfather HQ
Although dart frogs feature regularly on the Frogfather Live Cam, the idea behind the camera has always been broader:
to provide a genuine window into the animals and bioactive environments maintained here at Frogfather HQ.
Depending on the day, you may find dart frogs, tree frogs, geckos or other inhabitants of the collection on screen.
Sometimes something fascinating happens directly in front of the camera. Sometimes everybody decides to hide.
That unpredictability is exactly why we keep the feed live.
About the Frogfather Live Cam
The Frogfather Live Cam provides an unscripted look inside the working vivariums at Frogfather HQ in Nottingham.
The featured animals change regularly, allowing us to show natural behaviour, feeding, breeding, exploration and the
day-to-day reality of maintaining mature bioactive enclosures.
This is a live animal enclosure rather than a television programme, so activity will naturally vary throughout the day.
If the vivarium looks quiet, check back later – the inhabitants are usually just somewhere the camera cannot see them.
