Whether dart frogs need UVB is one of the most debated subjects in amphibian husbandry. Some successful keepers use no dedicated UVB and provide vitamin D3 through carefully formulated supplements. Others provide low, controlled ultraviolet exposure alongside appropriate dietary supplementation.
The most accurate answer is that captive dart frogs can be maintained successfully without dedicated UVB when their nutritional requirements are reliably met. However, carefully provided UVB may offer a useful additional route for vitamin D3 synthesis and can form part of a well-designed, naturalistic husbandry system.
The important question is therefore not simply whether UVB is present. It is whether the frogs receive an appropriate total provision of vitamin D3 and calcium without being exposed to excessive ultraviolet radiation, heat or dehydration.

What Is UVB?
Ultraviolet B is a band of ultraviolet radiation with wavelengths shorter than visible light. It is different from the visible light produced by ordinary plant-growing LEDs.
A bright or “full-spectrum” LED does not necessarily produce useful UVB. Unless a lamp has been specifically designed, tested and labelled as a UVB source, it should be treated as visible lighting only.
UVB can stimulate vitamin D3 synthesis in the skin. Vitamin D3 then plays an important role in calcium absorption and normal skeletal function. This is why UVB and dietary supplementation must be considered as parts of the same nutritional system.

Powerful reptile lamps intended for basking species should not simply be placed over a dart frog vivarium. Small amphibians living in a confined enclosure must always be able to escape the radiation completely.

Shade and Self-Regulation
The provision of shade is fundamental. Even a carefully selected lamp becomes inappropriate if the frog cannot move away from it.
Create a genuine exposure gradient using:
- Broad-leaved plants.
- Bromeliads and overlapping foliage.
- Cork bark and branches.
- Background ledges and planting pockets.
- Leaf litter and ground-level shelters.
- Areas positioned outside the main UVB beam.
Shade must exist at the heights the frogs actually use. A dark area at ground level is not sufficient if an arboreal or climbing frog spends most of its time near the top.
Dense planting should not be used as an excuse to install an unnecessarily powerful lamp. Plants grow, die back and are pruned, meaning the amount of shade can change substantially over time.
Why UVB Lamp Percentage Is Not Enough
A label such as 2.5%, 5%, 6% or 7% describes the lamp, but it does not tell you the ultraviolet exposure reaching a frog.
The final level is influenced by:
- The specific lamp and reflector.
- The distance between the lamp and frog.
- Whether mesh is present.
- The density and material of that mesh.
- The angle of the fixture.
- The age and operating condition of the lamp.
- Plants, hardscape and other obstructions.

Does UVB Pass Through Mesh or Glass?
Glass and acrylic
Ordinary glass and most acrylic barriers block the useful UVB emitted by husbandry lamps. A UVB fixture positioned over a solid glass top may illuminate the enclosure visibly while providing little or no useful UVB beneath it.
Mesh
Mesh allows some UVB to pass, but reduces the amount according to its material and the proportion of the lamp it obstructs. Fine or dense mesh may cause a substantial reduction.
Do not apply a standard correction without measuring or consulting reliable data for the specific enclosure and mesh.
Lamp position
UVB lamps should normally remain outside the enclosure to prevent direct contact and simplify safe installation. They must be positioned above a suitable mesh section rather than through solid glass.
UVB and Dietary Supplementation
Using UVB does not mean feeder insects should be offered without appropriate supplementation. Fruit flies and other captive feeders do not automatically provide a complete calcium, vitamin and mineral profile.

How to Install UVB Safely
- Select a suitable lamp. Avoid unnecessarily powerful basking lamps designed for high-exposure reptiles.
- Position it over mesh. Do not expect useful UVB to pass through solid glass or acrylic.
- Create an exposure gradient. Only part of the enclosure needs to fall within the primary UVB area.
- Provide complete shade. Frogs must be able to leave the UVB zone at every height they regularly use.
- Set the correct distance. Use manufacturer data as a starting point and measure where possible.
- Use a suitable riser. Raising the fixture may improve the exposure gradient, light spread and heat dissipation.
- Check temperature. Measure inside the vivarium rather than relying on room temperature.
- Observe the frogs. Behaviour is an important part of ongoing assessment.

Record the enclosure temperature before installing the new lamp, then compare conditions after it begins operating. Check temperatures during the warmest part of the lighting period and during hot weather.
Observe whether the frogs:
- Continue to use both exposed and shaded areas.
- Feed and behave normally.
- Remain visible during their usual activity periods.
- Retain normal skin and eye condition.
- Can access several completely sheltered retreats.
Reassess the installation after pruning plants or rearranging hardscape. Removing a single large leaf can expose a previously shaded perch.
