Description
Yellow-Bellied Toad – Bombina variegata
Captive-bred juvenile Yellow-Bellied Toads, a European semi-aquatic species associated in nature with shallow temporary pools and terrestrial refuges.
Beginner and hardiness wording corrected
Earlier copy described this species as “extremely hardy”, adaptable and one of the best amphibians for beginners. We have removed those claims. Captive Bombina still depend on clean water, appropriate cool-to-moderate temperatures, good feeding and careful hygiene.
Environment
Provide a semi-aquatic enclosure with easy movement between clean shallow water and terrestrial cover. Avoid prolonged overheating. “Moderate to high humidity” is not a sufficient care prescription by itself: water quality, ventilation and access to both wet and drier resting sites matter more.
Feeding
Offer appropriately sized live invertebrates and a suitable supplementation programme. Waxworms should be occasional. Monitor body condition rather than relying on a fixed feeding schedule.
Group housing
Compatible groups may work in sufficiently large, well-managed enclosures, but group housing is not automatically risk-free. Monitor feeding access and maintain water quality as animal density increases.
Skin secretions
Bombina produce defensive skin secretions. Keep handling minimal, wash hands afterwards and avoid contact with eyes or mouth. Do not mix them with other amphibian species.
Live-Animal Husbandry Review
Last reviewed: 5 September 2026
Temperature, moisture, enclosure size, social compatibility and supplementation should be matched to the species, life stage and individual animals. Frogfather therefore avoids treating a single RH percentage, fixed enclosure size or pair/group formula as a universal rule.
