About Oriental fire-bellied toads

Bombina orientalis, commonly known as the Oriental fire-bellied toad, is a small semi-aquatic amphibian. Adults have bright green or olive upper surfaces, usually marked with black, and a striking orange-red and black underside.

The brightly coloured belly is used as a warning display. When threatened, the toad may arch its body to reveal the contrasting coloration underneath.

These toads are active during the day and spend much of their time moving between shallow water and land. When maintained correctly, adults can be engaging and long-lived amphibians.

Scientific name Bombina orientalis

Origin Captive bred at Frogfather HQ
Adult lifestyle Semi-aquatic
Activity Primarily active during the day
Adult size Approximately 4–5 cm
Social grouping Can usually be maintained in a suitable group

Housing fire-bellied toad tadpoles

Fire-bellied toad tadpoles can normally be raised communally in a filtered aquarium, provided that it is not overcrowded and water quality is carefully maintained.

The aquarium should contain clean, conditioned water with plenty of swimming space. Live aquatic plants can provide cover, improve the environment and offer surfaces on which the tadpoles can graze.

  • Use dechlorinated or otherwise suitably conditioned water.
  • Keep the temperature stable and avoid overheating.
  • Provide gentle filtration without a powerful current.
  • Cover filter intakes so small tadpoles cannot be drawn inside.
  • Include live plants and areas of cover.
  • Avoid overcrowding the aquarium.
  • Carry out partial water changes when required.
  • Never replace all the water or make sudden changes in water chemistry.

A mature sponge filter is particularly useful because it provides gentle biological filtration without producing a dangerous current.

Feeding

Fire-bellied toad tadpoles are omnivorous and will graze on algae, plant material and other organic matter. They can be offered a varied diet of good-quality tadpole food, algae-based fish food and other appropriate finely crushed aquatic foods.

Feed small quantities and monitor how quickly the food is consumed. Uneaten food should not be allowed to accumulate, as decomposing food can rapidly reduce water quality.

Good water quality is more important than heavy feeding. A small amount of food offered regularly is safer than adding a large quantity at once.

Metamorphosis

As the tadpoles develop, the rear legs will appear first, followed by the front legs. Once the front legs emerge, the developing toadlets will begin absorbing their tails and preparing to leave the water.

At this stage, they must be given easy access to land. Floating cork bark, a gently sloping shoreline or another secure exit should be provided so that newly metamorphosed toadlets cannot become exhausted or drown.

The time taken to metamorphose varies according to age, temperature, diet, stocking density and individual development. It is therefore important to monitor the tadpoles rather than relying on a fixed timetable.

Caring for newly emerged toadlets

Newly metamorphosed fire-bellied toadlets are very small. They should initially be kept in a secure, simple enclosure with shallow water, easy access to land and plenty of cover.

They will require very small live foods, such as springtails, appropriately sized fruit flies and other tiny invertebrates. Food should be dusted with a suitable amphibian vitamin and mineral supplement.

A simple grow-out enclosure makes it easier to monitor feeding, cleanliness and body condition during this important stage.

Adult accommodation

Adult Oriental fire-bellied toads require a secure semi-aquatic enclosure containing both clean water and accessible land. The water should be filtered and arranged so that the toads can leave it easily.

They can usually be maintained in compatible groups when given sufficient room, feeding opportunities and visual cover. Their enclosure should be securely covered, as fire-bellied toads are capable climbers and can escape through surprisingly small gaps.

Handling and hygiene

Fire-bellied toads produce defensive skin secretions that may irritate the eyes, mouth or broken skin. They should be treated as animals to observe rather than handle.

  • Only handle the toads when necessary for their welfare.
  • Wear clean, damp, powder-free gloves if handling is unavoidable.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after enclosure maintenance.
  • Never touch your face or eyes while working with the animals.
  • Keep the toads and their equipment away from food-preparation areas.

Collection and delivery

Tadpoles may be collected by arrangement from Nottingham or sent using an appropriate tracked next-day service in secure, insulated packaging.

Dispatch may be postponed if weather or transport conditions could compromise their welfare. Animal welfare will always take priority over the original dispatch date.

Before ordering

  • Prepare and condition the aquarium before the tadpoles arrive.
  • Use gentle filtration with a protected intake.
  • Have suitable tadpole food ready.
  • Prepare a secure toadlet grow-out enclosure before metamorphosis.
  • Make sure tiny live foods will be available for the new toadlets.
  • Ensure that someone will be available to receive the delivery.

Tadpoles cannot be sexed. Adult sex, precise coloration and the exact time required to reach metamorphosis cannot be guaranteed.

I ordered three Santa Isabels from Tony on the 8th of August (my birthday) the moment the email came to say they'd become available again 😊 They were personally delivered by the great Frogfather himself yesterday, just two days later, on the 10th, which was a lovely surprise and it was so very nice to meet Tony in person! The Santa's looked beautifully healthy and super cute, were packed very well and kept moist in their own transport tub. They are incredibly sweet 💙 I was also thrilled to receive a very generous care package and care sheet for the darts, and lots of good advice from Tony! Again very unexpected but most welcome. In all, a fantastic experience buying frogs from the Frogfather and I'm sure I'll be back for more soon! Cheers Tony!

Absolutely epic customer service from this company. We've placed a few orders with them previously and always been very happy with the quality and service. This time round, I placed the order (knowing I was approaching last minute ordering!) and got in touch to let them know I was happy to pay for express shipping if there was anything they could do to help me. A couple of very friendly and helpful messages later from Tony, and the parcel landed on my desk in less than 24 hours. Customer service like this is a breath of fresh air these days and very much appreciated. If you're considering purchasing from these guys, no need to hesitate. Fantastic product offering and competitive prices. I run an invert business, and I'm now seriously contemplating the need for frogs in my life. Cheers Frogfather! :)

🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸 I honestly can’t recommend Tony enough. My mum recently lost her beloved frog and was absolutely devastated. Tony was so kind and supportive throughout the whole situation. He took the time to explain what may have happened, reassured her not to blame herself, and answered all of our questions with so much patience and knowledge. We ended up getting a beautiful adult Azureus from him, along with a stunning vivarium, and my mum is absolutely over the moon. You can tell Tony genuinely cares about his frogs and wants them to go to the best possible homes. The frogs are clearly very well cared for, and his knowledge is incredible. Nothing ever felt rushed or like a sales pitch — he was just genuinely helpful from start to finish. Thank you, Tony, for all your kindness and help. We now have a very happy frog mum again! 🐸
