Valerio’s Glass Frog, also known as the La Palma Glass Frog or Reticulated Glass Frog, is one of the most unusual and delicate frogs occasionally available in the UK hobby. This is a small, nocturnal, arboreal species with a translucent appearance, yellow-green reticulated patterning and the classic “glass frog” look that makes the group so fascinating.
This is not a beginner frog. Hyalinobatrachium valerioi is best suited to experienced keepers who already understand stable humidity, good ventilation, clean water, micro-prey feeding and mature planted vivarium systems. Adults are small, with males generally around 19.5–24 mm and females around 22.5–26 mm, so they need careful feeding and a well-planted enclosure rather than a large, open, dry display.
In nature, this species is associated with humid forest habitats and vegetation around streams. In captivity, the aim should be a mature, bioactive, well-planted vivarium with excellent humidity control, broad leaves, fine climbing structure and very clean water. They are primarily nocturnal and are usually seen resting on leaves or moving gently around the planted areas after lights out.
Feeding should be based around appropriately sized live foods such as fruit flies, pinhead crickets and other small soft-bodied invertebrates. As with all amphibians, clean conditions, correct supplementation and careful observation are important.
