Self-Wetting Dart Frog Breeding Dome
A smarter spawning shelter that helps keep your breeding dish naturally damp, using the water already entering your vivarium.
A simple solution to a familiar breeding problem
Anyone who breeds dart frogs knows that a suitable spawning site is only part of the equation. Many frogs favour a sheltered, slightly damp surface for depositing their eggs. Traditional breeding domes sit over Petri dishes, but those dishes can dry out between misting sessions, leaving you to wet them manually.
Our Self-Wetting Breeding Dome takes a different approach. A small opening at the top allows water from your existing misting system, or droplets falling from nearby plants, to enter the dome and replenish moisture in the dish beneath.
Less manual maintenance. A more consistently damp spawning site. And one less thing to remember.
Why self-wetting?
Rather than repeatedly lifting the dome to spray the dish, normal vivarium misting can help replenish its moisture. The result is a practical, low-maintenance spawning shelter designed around the way dart frog vivariums already operate.
Designed with the frogs in mind
💧 Self-Wetting Design
A discreet top opening allows misting water and plant droplets to replenish the dish beneath.
🌿 Sheltered Spawning Site
The enclosed dome creates a secluded space for natural dart frog courtship and egg-laying behaviour.
✅ Petri Dish Compatible
At approximately 9.5 cm across, the dome accommodates standard 9 cm Petri dishes.
📦 Dish Included
Every dome includes a purpose-made 3D-printed dish, so you can use it straight away.
How does it work?
- Position your dish. Use the included 3D-printed dish or your existing standard 9 cm Petri dish.
- Place the dome over it. Position the entrance where your frogs can comfortably access it.
- Let your misting system help. Water reaching the opening at the top can drip into the dish and replenish moisture.
- Check periodically. Monitor the dish and adjust positioning or misting if needed to keep the spawning surface suitably damp without allowing excessive water to accumulate.
Tip: Position the dome beneath a suitable misting path or an overhanging plant where droplets naturally collect and fall. The amount of water entering will depend on placement and your misting schedule.
Tested with our own breeding frogs
At Frogfather HQ, we’ve been experimenting with this design for approximately three to four months, using it with our Dendrobates tinctorius Cobalt and Azureus frogs.
The response in our vivariums has been encouraging, and the design has become a welcome addition to our breeding setups. Rather than selling a product based purely on theory, we’re sharing something we’ve developed through practical observation and day-to-day husbandry.
Generously sized for dart frogs
Measuring approximately 9.5 cm in diameter, the dome provides a sheltered spawning space suitable for a wide range of dart frogs, including larger Dendrobates species. It is also designed to fit over the standard 9 cm Petri dishes already used by many keepers.

Frequently asked questions
Will it fit my existing Petri dishes?
Yes, the dome is designed to accommodate standard 9 cm Petri dishes. A purpose-made 3D-printed dish is also included.
Does it need a separate water supply?
No. The design uses water entering through the opening at the top, typically from normal vivarium misting or dripping plants. It does not require plumbing or a separate reservoir.
Will the dish stay wet all the time?
That depends on the positioning of the dome, misting frequency and the amount of water reaching the opening. Check regularly and adjust as necessary. The dome reduces the need for manual wetting but does not guarantee constant moisture.
Does the dome guarantee breeding?
No. Successful breeding depends on numerous factors, including compatible animals, maturity, nutrition, environmental conditions and appropriate husbandry. The dome provides a practical spawning site rather than a guarantee of egg production.
Which colour should I choose?
Black provides a discreet appearance, green blends naturally with planted environments, and brown complements leaf litter, cork and naturalistic backgrounds. All three offer the same functional design.
