Almirante Dart Froglets – Oophaga pumilio (UK Bred)

Captive-bred, well-started Oophaga pumilio ‘Almirante’ froglets feeding independently on appropriately sized live prey.

Experience level

These are specialist poison frogs. The previous “perfect for experienced frogkeepers” wording has been replaced with practical husbandry information rather than a sales label.

Environment

Provide a densely planted, well-ventilated enclosure with leaf litter, vertical structure, refuges and useful wet/drier microhabitats. We have removed the simplistic “high humidity + daily misting” formula: misting frequency should be adjusted to the actual enclosure, ventilation, room temperature and moisture cycle.

Bioactive wording corrected

A bioactive enclosure can be useful, but it is not biologically essential in the sense that the frogs cannot be kept safely without one. What is essential is that the enclosure provides appropriate environmental conditions, security, feeding access and hygiene.

Feeding

Offer appropriately sized fruit flies and other suitable micro-prey with an evidence-informed supplementation programme. Springtails may supplement feeding opportunities but should not be relied upon as the sole food source.

Social and breeding note

Oophaga pumilio can be territorial and has specialised obligate egg-feeding parental care. Froglets are unsexed, and future pair/group compatibility cannot be predicted reliably at this stage.
