A reusable kit for preparing and maintaining Drosophila melanogaster or Drosophila hydei cultures. No live insects are included.

Performance claims corrected
Earlier copy said the formulation was designed to “maximise productivity”, reduce mites and mould, increase hatch yield and extend culture lifespan. Unless supported by controlled comparisons of the final formulation, those are not outcomes we should guarantee.
Frogfather uses this style of culture system because it has worked practically in our own frog room. Culture performance still depends on fly strain, starter density, temperature, media moisture, hygiene and contamination.
Mould, mites and preservatives
Good hygiene and appropriate media formulation can reduce some culture failures, but no dry mix or additive makes a fruit-fly culture sterile or mite-proof. If preservatives are included, use the product only according to the supplied recipe. Do not increase preservative levels arbitrarily.
Use
Prepare the media according to the supplied instructions, allow it to reach a suitable consistency and temperature, add surface material, then inoculate with a healthy starter culture. Keep backup cultures at different stages so that one failure does not interrupt feeder supply.
Feeder-Insect & Nutrition Review

Different feeder insects can increase prey variety, but variety alone does not make a captive diet nutritionally complete. Published amphibian-nutrition reviews show that feeder insects vary considerably in calcium, vitamins and other nutrients, and that dusting/gut-loading are commonly used to improve nutrient delivery.
Unless a batch-specific nutrient analysis is available, Frogfather does not describe an individual feeder species or colour strain as nutritionally “balanced”, “complete” or inherently superior.
