DART FROG CLAY BATH+

Fine bentonite clay for keepers who choose to offer an occasional natural-clay area.

Frogfather uses clay as an optional husbandry feature; we do not claim that dart frogs require clay baths or that bentonite treats skin, shedding, hydration, mineral or medical problems.

Description

Dart Frog Clay Bath+ – Pure Bentonite Clay for Optional Amphibian Husbandry

Dart Frog Clay Bath+ is a fine bentonite clay supplied for keepers who choose to offer a natural-clay surface or shallow clay preparation as an occasional part of captive husbandry.

It contains no added perfume, fragrance or dye.

Evidence and limitations

Dart frogs and other amphibians naturally encounter soils, mineral substrates and water in the wild. However, natural contact with clay does not by itself demonstrate that captive frogs require clay baths or that bentonite provides a therapeutic skin or mineral benefit.

We have therefore removed earlier claims that this product supports healthy shedding or normal skin condition, and we no longer recommend spot-applying clay to retained shed. Those uses are not supported strongly enough for us to present them as established benefits.

Amphibian skin can absorb water, electrolytes and other compounds, and permeability differs between species. Use only clean materials of known composition and avoid adding medications, preservatives or other chemicals without veterinary direction.

How Frogfather uses it

At Frogfather we have offered clay occasionally as an optional environmental/husbandry feature, including during settling-in periods. This is our captive-keeping practice rather than a scientifically established requirement.

How to prepare

  1. Use amphibian-safe water and a clean shallow dish.
  2. Add only enough clay to create a light suspension or shallow soft layer.
  3. Allow voluntary access; do not restrain the frog in the preparation.
  4. Remove if contaminated and prepare fresh material for later use.

Not a medicine

This product is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure skin disease, retained shed, dehydration, electrolyte disturbance, poisoning, infection or nutritional disease. If a frog has persistent abnormal shedding, skin lesions, weakness or other signs of illness, seek an experienced exotic-animal veterinary surgeon.

Husbandry & Evidence Review

Last reviewed: 5 September 2026

Amphibian skin is physiologically important and permeable to water, electrolytes and many dissolved compounds. That does not establish a therapeutic benefit from bentonite or other clay baths. We therefore distinguish Frogfather’s optional use of clay from evidence-based medical or nutritional treatment.
