10L Dried Oak Leaves for Bioactive Vivariums, Isopods & Amphibians
A bulk 10-litre pack of dried oak leaves intended for use as botanical leaf litter in bioactive terrariums, vivariums and invertebrate culture systems.
Why oak leaf litter?
- Creates layered floor cover and hiding structure.
- Provides food and habitat surfaces for many detritivorous isopods and other microfauna as it decomposes.
- Useful for building a mixed leaf-litter layer with different textures and breakdown rates.
- Can shade substrate and slow local surface moisture loss.
Preparation and contamination claims
Earlier wording said CO₂ treatment and drying “prevent the introduction of pests or mould”. Treatment and drying can reduce some unwanted organisms, but no preparation method should be presented as an absolute guarantee that every leaf is sterile or contaminant-free.
Inspect leaves before use. Avoid material with suspicious residues, persistent chemical odour or heavy visible contamination. Where animal exposure is involved, use botanicals from a source you trust and prepare them appropriately.
Bioactive claims
Oak leaves contribute organic material and physical structure to a bioactive system. We no longer claim they automatically promote “soil health”, regulate humidity or create a balanced enclosure. Those outcomes depend on the whole system, including substrate, plants, microbes, microfauna, ventilation and routine maintenance.

Leaf litter can provide cover, feeding surfaces for detritivores, organic material for decomposition and local moisture retention. Breakdown rate varies greatly between plant species, individual leaves and enclosure conditions.
Some Terminalia catappa extracts show antimicrobial activity in laboratory assays, but that does not establish that ordinary dried leaves in a frog vivarium prevent infection, suppress mould reliably or improve amphibian skin health. We therefore describe tannins and botanical use without turning in-vitro extract results into veterinary claims.
