Why We Created ORBIT™ – Rethinking Vivarium Lighting

Every vivarium changes. We believed the lighting should be able to change with it.

For years, Frogfather has designed practical lighting accessories for reptile keepers, amphibian enthusiasts and bioactive vivarium builders across the UK. Those products have supported thousands of enclosures, from simple gecko setups to heavily planted tropical displays.

But as vivariums evolved, so did the questions we were being asked.

Keepers wanted more flexibility. They wanted to fine-tune their lighting, experiment with layouts, accommodate new technology and adapt their enclosures without replacing every part of their setup.

That’s where the idea for ORBIT™ began.

Every Vivarium Evolves

No matter how carefully you plan an enclosure, it never truly stays the same.

Plants establish themselves. Moss spreads across hardscape. Branches are repositioned. Animals mature. New species arrive. Better lighting becomes available. What seemed like the perfect setup on day one often looks very different a year later.

That’s especially true in bioactive vivariums, where living plants and natural growth are part of the appeal. The enclosure develops over time, becoming something that couldn’t have existed on the day it was first assembled.

Yet most lighting accessories have traditionally been designed around a single fixed position.

There’s nothing wrong with that approach. In fact, for many keepers it’s exactly what’s needed. But we couldn’t ignore the growing number of customers asking for something more adaptable.

The Problem We Couldn’t Ignore

Over the years we’ve had countless conversations with customers about vivarium lighting. Some wanted to lift a light a little higher. Others wanted to reduce glare, improve access for maintenance or accommodate new planting. Many simply wanted the flexibility to experiment without replacing perfectly good equipment.

Individually, they were small requests.

Together, they highlighted something much bigger.

Modern vivariums have become increasingly sophisticated, but the way we support lighting has changed very little. Fixed supports remain an excellent solution when you already know exactly where your lighting needs to sit, but they naturally offer limited flexibility if your enclosure changes over time.

That isn’t a flaw. It’s simply the nature of a fixed design.

We realised there was room for something different—not a replacement for our existing products, but another option for keepers whose enclosures continue to evolve long after the day they’re first built.

That idea became the foundation of ORBIT™.

From first sketch to finished product — ORBIT™ was developed through real-world testing, repeated prototyping and continuous refinement.

A Different Way of Thinking About Vivarium Lighting

When we first started developing ORBIT™, our goal wasn’t simply to make another light stand.

We wanted to rethink what a lighting support could be.

Traditional supports are designed around a single lighting system and a single installation. They do that job extremely well, which is why we continue to manufacture our original fixed designs today.

But modern vivariums rarely remain static. Lighting changes, enclosures are upgraded and equipment evolves over time.

Instead of asking, “How do we build another bracket?“, we started asking a different question.

How do we create a platform that can continue evolving alongside the hobby itself?

That single question changed the direction of the entire project.

One Platform. Endless Possibilities.

Rather than designing ORBIT™ around one specific lighting system, we designed the platform first.

Compatible lighting is then supported using interchangeable inserts, allowing the same core platform to work with different lighting systems without replacing the entire support.

That approach gives ORBIT™ room to grow.

As new lighting systems are introduced and existing products evolve, the aim is simple:

Keep the platform. Change the insert.

It’s a philosophy that reduces waste, protects your investment and allows the platform to develop alongside both the hobby and future Frogfather products.

Why We’re Keeping Our Original Designs

When ORBIT™ was finished, we found ourselves asking another question.

What happens to the products that helped build Frogfather?

The easy answer would have been to discontinue them.

But that didn’t feel right.

Our original fixed supports have been used above thousands of vivariums. They’re dependable, simple to install and continue to do exactly what they were designed to do.

ORBIT™ wasn’t created because those products stopped working.

It was created because some keepers wanted more flexibility.

They’re two different solutions to two different problems.

That’s why we’ve chosen to keep our original designs available through the Frogfather Clearance Collection.

They’re proven products, manufactured to the same standards as our current range, and offered at exceptional value while this limited allocation remains available.

Different Keepers. Different Priorities.

One of the things we’ve learned over the years is that there isn’t a single “perfect” vivarium.

Some keepers spend months refining every detail of a heavily planted display. Others simply want a clean, reliable enclosure that meets the needs of the animals they care for.

Neither approach is better.

They’re simply different.

The same applies to lighting.
