Bandit Braces – High-Orange Line-Bred Bumblebee Dart Frog (Dendrobates leucomelas)
Taxonomy corrected September 2026: the previous listing incorrectly called this frog Dendrobates tinctorius “Leucamelia”. The accepted Bumblebee/Yellow-banded Poison Frog is Dendrobates leucomelas. “Leucamelia” is not an accepted species name in the current amphibian taxonomy used for this review.
Bandit Braces is the Frogfather/hobby line name used for this selectively bred high-orange stock. It is a line name, not a locality or taxonomic rank.
Appearance
- High orange/yellow expression.
- Broken or reduced black patterning.
- Distinctive limb banding that inspired the “Bandit Braces” name.
- Individual colour and pattern vary and can change as animals mature.
Lineage transparency
The earlier page made absolute claims that these frogs were genetically “pure”, never crossed, not locality mixes and uniquely available in the UK. Appearance alone cannot demonstrate those claims. We therefore describe the stock according to the breeder/keeper lineage information available to Frogfather and do not present genetic purity or UK exclusivity as independently verified facts unless supporting records are available.
The previous comparison also referred to “Dendrobates tinctorius Lehmannii”. The recognised species is Oophaga lehmanni, which is a different species and genus. Similar colour or pattern does not imply close lineage or comparable genetics.
Husbandry
Care should follow species-appropriate D. leucomelas husbandry rather than D. tinctorius care. Provide a well-ventilated planted enclosure with abundant leaf litter, cover and useful wet/drier microhabitats. Moderate tropical-room temperatures are commonly used successfully; avoid prolonged overheating and do not treat one 22–26°C range as a universal optimum.
D. leucomelas can sometimes be maintained in compatible groups, but group tolerance is not guaranteed. Monitor mature animals for competition, aggression and unequal feeding access.
Feeding
Offer appropriately sized live prey with an evidence-informed supplementation programme. Enhanced orange colour should not be treated as a direct health or nutritional marker.
