Description
3D-Printed Dart Frog Breeding Cave
A reusable sheltered hide designed to provide dart frogs with an additional retreat and potential egg-deposition site.
What it provides
- A dark, sheltered space that some dart frogs may choose to use.
- A removable artificial alternative to coconut-shell style hides.
- A smooth surface that is easier to wipe and rinse than many rough natural materials.
Breeding claims corrected
We previously described this hide as an “optimal breeding site” that could improve hatch rates and reduce infection risk. We have removed those claims. Providing a hide does not guarantee courtship, egg laying, fertility or hatch success.
PLA and hygiene
PLA is the base polymer used for this printed component, but finished-part properties depend on the filament formulation, pigments/additives and printing process. We therefore do not call the finished item “non-toxic” or claim that its surface prevents mould or bacterial growth.
Rinse before use, inspect regularly and clean when fouled. If the surface becomes damaged, heavily scratched or difficult to clean, replace the part.
Frogfather practice
We use removable artificial hides because they can make visual inspection and cleaning easier. Whether frogs choose a particular hide or deposition site remains species- and individual-dependent.
Breeding-Accessory Review
Last reviewed: 5 September 2026
Artificial hides and deposition accessories can provide additional shelter or potential egg-laying sites. They do not guarantee breeding, fertility or hatch rate. Frogfather also avoids calling a 3D-printed item “non-toxic” or biologically inert solely because it is made from PLA: finished-part properties depend on filament formulation, additives, printing and use conditions.
