Description
Sharp-Ribbed Newt (Pleurodeles waltl)
The Sharp-Ribbed Newt is one of the most unusual amphibians available in the hobby and is often considered one of the hardiest aquatic newt species. Native to Spain, Portugal and parts of Morocco, these fascinating amphibians spend the majority of their lives in water and are renowned for their prehistoric appearance and unique defence mechanism.
Unlike most amphibians, Sharp-Ribbed Newts are capable of pushing the tips of their ribs through specialised toxin-coated glands along their sides when threatened. This remarkable adaptation has earned them their common name and makes them one of the most extraordinary amphibians in the world.
Captive-bred specimens are generally hardy, active and highly responsive to feeding. They quickly learn to recognise their keeper and will often approach the front of the aquarium when food is offered.

Housing Requirements
Sharp-Ribbed Newts are best maintained in a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming room. A group can be comfortably housed in a well-filtered aquarium with aquatic plants, driftwood and hiding places.
Unlike tropical frogs, these amphibians prefer cooler temperatures and generally do not require additional heating in most UK homes. Good water quality is essential, and a quality filtration system should be provided.
Aquatic plants such as Java Fern, Anubias and floating species can help create a more natural environment while also improving water quality.
Diet
Sharp-Ribbed Newts are enthusiastic feeders and readily accept a variety of foods including earthworms, bloodworms, blackworms, sinking amphibian pellets, freshwater invertebrates and appropriately sized live insects.
A varied diet helps promote strong growth, vibrant colouration and long-term health.
Behaviour
This species is generally peaceful and can often be maintained in groups when provided with adequate space. They spend much of their time exploring, resting amongst plants or searching for food. Their curious nature and willingness to feed in view of their keeper make them particularly rewarding amphibians to observe.
