Drosophila melanogaster Fruit Fly Cultures
Small flightless fruit-fly cultures supplied in different development stages so keepers can choose a culture that better matches their current feeder rotation.
Culture stages
- New: recently started culture with most production still ahead.
- Intermediate: developing culture with larvae/pupae and/or early adult production.
- Mature: at or near active adult production at the time of dispatch.
Timing claims corrected
The previous listing said a new culture offers the “longest lifespan”, an intermediate culture provides a predictable balance, and a mature culture is feeder-ready on arrival. Transit temperature and culture biology can change timing significantly.
Culture stages describe the condition at dispatch; they do not guarantee a fixed remaining lifespan, a particular number of adult flies or immediate production after delivery.
Feeder suitability
D. melanogaster is a useful small feeder for many dart-frog froglets, thumbnail species and other appropriately sized insectivores. “Ideal” depends on the individual animal and prey size. Do not use prey that is too large or rely on one feeder species as a complete nutrition programme.
Supplementation
Fruit flies can be dusted immediately before feeding with an appropriate supplement. Nutrient intake depends on the feeder, dusting method, supplement, UVB/D3 provision and the rest of the diet.
