Description
Free Reusable Fruit Fly Media Insert – Spiral Design (STL Download)
At Frogfather HQ, we culture a considerable number of fruit flies, and that means using a lot of climbing material over time.
Traditionally, fruit fly cultures rely on wood wool, excelsior, packing paper or similar materials to give the flies somewhere to climb, rest and move around.
These materials work, but they are usually thrown away when the culture is finished.
We wanted to explore whether a reusable, 3D-printed alternative could reduce that waste without compromising the practicality of culturing fruit flies.
Our Spiral Fruit Fly Media Insert is one of several experimental designs we’re making available as a completely free STL download.
Introducing the Spiral Design
Unlike our open Mesh design, the Spiral Insert uses a continuous spiral arrangement with closely spaced vertical ribs.
This creates a substantial amount of accessible surface area within a relatively compact cylindrical structure.
The idea is simple: provide plenty of places for fruit flies to climb and rest while keeping the insert removable and potentially reusable.
The ribbed surfaces also introduce additional texture, rather than relying on completely smooth plastic walls.
Why a Spiral Structure?
- Large surface area: The continuous spiral provides extensive vertical surfaces within a compact space.
- Ribbed climbing surfaces: Fine vertical ridges provide additional texture for fruit flies to explore.
- Compact arrangement: The spiral packs multiple surfaces into the culture container without requiring loose filling materials.
- One-piece construction: Designed as a single removable insert rather than separate components.
- Reusable: Intended to be cleaned and reused between culture cycles.
- Reduced disposable waste: Explores an alternative to regularly replacing wood-based climbing materials.
Designed for PETG 3D Printing
We recommend printing this insert using PETG filament.
PETG offers good moisture resistance and useful durability, making it a sensible material for experimenting with reusable culture equipment.
We recommend printing slowly and prioritising quality over speed, particularly because the design incorporates closely spaced ribs and thin walls.
A properly calibrated printer will help achieve more consistent results.
Printing performance will depend on your printer, nozzle, filament, slicer settings and cooling configuration.
Always inspect the completed print for loose filament, sharp edges or defects before introducing it into a fruit fly culture.
Can It Be Cleaned and Reused?
That’s one of the questions we’re hoping to answer through real-world testing.
The Spiral Insert has been designed with reuse in mind, but its closely spaced surfaces may also create areas where culture residue accumulates.
We’re particularly interested in whether the spiral can be cleaned thoroughly and conveniently between culture cycles.
Remove organic residue, wash carefully using a suitable cleaning method, rinse where appropriate and allow the insert to dry before reuse.
Do not reuse an insert if it remains contaminated, cannot be adequately cleaned or has become damaged.
Why Are We Giving Away the STL?
Because these are prototypes, and we’d rather develop them with the hobby than release something commercially before we know how well it performs.
We’ve created several different designs, each approaching the challenge of reusable fruit fly climbing media differently.
Some prioritise openness and airflow. Others, like this Spiral design, focus on providing extensive climbing surfaces within a compact space.
We want to understand which approach actually works best.
We’d Love Your Feedback
If you have a 3D printer and regularly culture fruit flies, we’d love you to download the file and give it a try.
We’re particularly interested in:
- How successfully the insert prints.
- Whether fruit flies readily climb and occupy the spiral surfaces.
- How the culture performs compared with your usual climbing material.
- Whether the spacing between the spiral walls is practical.
- How easily the insert can be cleaned.
- Whether repeated use causes any damage or deterioration.
- What changes would improve the design.
Please send your observations, suggestions and constructive criticism privately through our usual Frogfather WhatsApp contact.
There’s absolutely no obligation to provide feedback, but every observation helps.
Our Longer-Term Plan: Injection Moulding
Our ambition is to identify the most successful design through community testing and then investigate producing it using injection moulding.
This could eventually allow us to offer affordable, reusable fruit fly culture inserts to keepers who don’t own 3D printers.
However, that decision will depend on real-world performance, cleaning practicality, manufacturing feasibility and the feedback we receive.
For now, these designs are free to experiment with.
How to Download Your Free STL
- Add this free digital product to your basket.
- Complete the £0.00 WooCommerce checkout.
- Download the STL file.
- Print in PETG, using a slow, quality-focused print profile.
- Try it in your fruit fly cultures and let us know what you think.
Downloading from outside the UK? Our current checkout may request a UK address even for free digital downloads. If you’re overseas, you can use a placeholder UK address to complete the checkout. No physical product will be shipped.
Please note: This is a digital STL file only. No physical insert is included. The design is experimental and its long-term durability, cleanability and effect on fruit fly culture performance have not yet been established.
Thank you for helping us explore a more reusable approach to fruit fly culturing.
