Description
Free Reusable Fruit Fly Media Insert – Diamond Design (STL Download)
At Frogfather HQ, we’re always experimenting with ways to make everyday amphibian husbandry a little more practical, efficient and sustainable.
One area we’ve been exploring is fruit fly culture media.
Traditional fruit fly cultures commonly use disposable materials such as wood wool, excelsior or packing paper to provide climbing and resting surfaces for the flies.
These materials work well, but they are generally discarded when the culture is finished.
We wanted to investigate whether a reusable insert could provide a practical alternative while reducing our reliance on single-use climbing materials.
That’s why we’ve developed several experimental 3D-printed designs and are making the STL files available completely free of charge.
Introducing the Diamond Design
Our Diamond Fruit Fly Media Insert takes a different approach from the Mesh and Spiral versions.
Rather than using a complex interconnected lattice or tightly packed spiral, the Diamond design features relatively broad vertical panels with a series of diamond-shaped openings.
These openings create additional edges and climbing opportunities while leaving much of the structure open.
The intention is to provide a useful climbing framework that is relatively straightforward to handle, inspect and clean.
What Makes the Diamond Design Different?
- Structured climbing surfaces: Vertical panels and diamond-shaped openings provide multiple surfaces and edges for fruit flies to explore.
- Open construction: Large openings allow movement through the structure and offer potential airflow advantages.
- Accessible geometry: Compared with more densely packed designs, the relatively open panels may be easier to inspect and clean.
- Reusable concept: Designed to be removed, cleaned and used again between culture cycles.
- Reduced disposable materials: Explores an alternative to repeatedly replacing wood-based climbing media.
- One-piece design: No separate components or assembly required.
Designed for PETG 3D Printing
We recommend printing the Diamond Insert using PETG filament.
PETG provides useful moisture resistance and durability, making it a sensible choice for experimental reusable culture equipment.
We recommend printing slowly and prioritising print quality over speed.
Pay particular attention to the diamond-shaped openings, edges and connecting sections to ensure the finished print is clean and structurally sound.
As with any 3D-printed design, results will depend on your printer, filament, slicer settings and calibration.
Inspect the completed insert carefully for loose filament, sharp edges, weak connections or other printing defects before use.
Cleaning and Reusing the Insert
One of the main objectives behind these designs is to create a removable insert that can potentially be cleaned and reused between fruit fly culture cycles.
The Diamond design’s relatively open construction may offer an advantage here, as its panels and openings are more accessible than some densely packed structures.
However, this remains an experimental prototype, and we haven’t yet established how the design performs over repeated cleaning and reuse.
Remove visible organic material, wash thoroughly using an appropriate method, rinse where necessary and allow the insert to dry before reuse.
Do not reuse the insert if contamination cannot be adequately removed or if the structure becomes damaged.
Why Are We Giving Away the STL?
Because we’d rather develop something genuinely useful with the help of the hobby than rush an untested product to market.
We’ve created three different approaches to reusable fruit fly climbing media:
- Mesh: An open, interconnected three-dimensional lattice.
- Spiral: A continuous, vertically ribbed structure designed to maximise surface area.
- Diamond: An open-panel design with diamond-shaped openings and accessible climbing surfaces.
Each has potential advantages and disadvantages.
What we really want to understand is how they perform in actual fruit fly cultures, rather than simply how they look on a computer screen.
We’d Love Your Feedback
If you own a 3D printer and regularly culture fruit flies, please feel free to download the STL and give it a try.
We’re particularly interested in:
- How easily the design prints in PETG.
- Whether fruit flies readily climb and occupy the panels.
- How the culture performs compared with your usual climbing materials.
- Whether the diamond-shaped openings provide sufficient usable surfaces.
- How easy the insert is to remove and clean.
- How well it holds up to repeated handling and cleaning.
- Any changes that could improve the design.
Please send your feedback privately through our usual Frogfather WhatsApp contact.
Constructive criticism is especially welcome. If something doesn’t work, we’d much rather know about it so we can improve the design.
There’s no obligation to provide feedback, but we genuinely appreciate anyone willing to help.
The Longer-Term Plan: Injection Moulding
Our ambition is to identify whichever design proves most successful through practical testing and then investigate producing it using injection moulding.
This could eventually allow us to offer affordable, reusable fruit fly culture inserts to keepers who don’t own 3D printers.
Injection moulding requires a significant initial investment, so we want to make sure we’re developing the right design before committing to production.
For now, all three STL designs are being released completely free of charge.
How to Download Your Free STL
- Add this free digital product to your basket.
- Complete the £0.00 checkout.
- Download the STL file.
- Print the insert in PETG, using a slow, quality-focused print profile.
- Try it in your fruit fly cultures and let us know what you think.
International downloads: Our current checkout configuration may request a UK address even for free digital products. If you’re outside the UK, you may need to use a placeholder UK address to complete the free checkout. Nothing will be physically shipped.
Important: This listing is for a digital STL file only. No physical insert is included. The design is an experimental prototype, and its long-term durability, cleanability and effect on fruit fly culture performance have not yet been established.
Thank you for helping us explore a more reusable approach to fruit fly culturing.
