Description
Custom-Built Bioactive Euro Vivarium – Commission Your Own Design
A bespoke Euro-style planted vivarium designed collaboratively around the intended animals, available space and preferred visual layout.
Species-led design
Ventilation, drainage, planting, hardscape, usable surfaces, hides and equipment are selected according to the intended inhabitants rather than a fixed template. Final suitability still depends on the exact species, group composition and husbandry.
Aged substrate
Frogfather maintains quantities of aged vivarium substrate containing established organic material, resident microorganisms and microfauna. Using aged material can provide a mature starting point, but it does not remove the need to settle and test the completed enclosure.
Microfauna
Commissioned enclosures are seeded with springtails, tropical white isopods and other suitable microfauna. These organisms can contribute to decomposition of leaf litter, fungal growth and other organic material. We have removed the phrase “complete clean-up crew” because no microfauna combination removes every waste product or guarantees ecosystem balance.
Ventilation and humidity
Fine mesh can help retain small feeder insects while allowing ventilation. The final balance between moisture retention and airflow should be tuned to the intended animals. “Elevated humidity” is not treated as a single universal target for all tropical amphibians.
Temporary fungal growth
New wood and cork can develop visible fungal growth during establishment. Springtails and isopods may graze some of this growth, but we do not guarantee that microfauna will remove it or that every mould bloom is harmless. Investigate persistent, foul-smelling or unusual growth and correct excessive moisture or ventilation problems where present.
Before livestock introduction
Run the finished enclosure and verify temperature, moisture cycles, drainage, misting, lighting and any UVB exposure before animals are added.
Available options
Options can include automated misting, plant lighting, species-appropriate UVB, drainage, water features, monitoring equipment and customised planting/hardscape. UVB and heating are selected according to the intended species rather than fitted as universal requirements.
Bioactive System & Evidence Review
Last reviewed: 5 September 2026
A bioactive vivarium can use plants, leaf litter, microorganisms and detritivorous invertebrates to process some organic material, but it is not a closed or self-sustaining ecosystem. Microarthropods can contribute to decomposition, although the magnitude of that effect varies with the organisms, substrate, organic material and environmental conditions.
Frogfather therefore uses terms such as aged, established or matured to describe systems that have been running before sale. Those terms do not guarantee biological stability, eliminate routine maintenance or prove that a vivarium is immediately suitable for any species.
