Bioactive Vivarium with Two Ranitomeya ‘Southern’ Dart Frogs & Automated Misting
An established 60 × 30 × 30 cm planted Euro-style vivarium supplied with two Ranitomeya variabilis ‘Southern’ dart frogs and the automated misting, substrate, planting and microfauna described here.
Established, not a closed ecosystem
The previous page called this a “complete, running ecosystem”, “fully established” and said there was no need for cycling. We now use established simply to mean that the enclosure has been running before sale. It is not maintenance-free, self-sustaining or exempt from a settling/checking period after transport.
Dimensions and stocking
The 60 cm height provides useful vertical structure for these particular Ranitomeya. The 30 × 30 cm footprint should not be presented as automatically suitable for all Ranitomeya or Oophaga. Species, group size, usable planting/structure and social behaviour must be assessed individually.
Automated misting
Wi-Fi misting is a useful husbandry tool, but it is not “set and forget”. Check nozzle output, reservoir level, drainage and actual enclosure moisture regularly. A timer cannot verify that frogs have appropriate wet/drier microhabitats or that the system has not failed.
Microfauna
Springtails and isopods can contribute to decomposition of suitable organic material. They do not process all waste or guarantee a healthier/stable environment without routine enclosure management.
After collection
Recheck temperature, ventilation, drainage, misting and feeding after the enclosure has been moved. Confirm both frogs are feeding and using the enclosure normally.
