Description
Adult / Sub-Adult Blue Azureus Dart Frog – Dendrobates tinctorius ‘Azureus’
A captive-bred Azureus offered as a single sexed or near-sexed individual as stated in the current listing.
Sexing note
If the listing states a percentage certainty rather than confirmed sex, treat that as a best husbandry assessment rather than a guarantee. Adult sexing is based on a combination of morphology and behaviour and can remain uncertain in younger animals.
Housing
Azureus are predominantly terrestrial dart frogs requiring usable floor area, leaf litter, cover, feeding access and good environmental structure. We have removed the old statement that 45 × 45 × 45 cm is automatically “ideal for a pair or trio”.
D. tinctorius can show significant same-sex aggression, particularly after maturity. Pairs are a practical starting arrangement in many collections, but compatibility must still be monitored and animals separated where necessary.
Environment
Provide a humid but well-ventilated vivarium with wet and drier microhabitats. We no longer prescribe constant 80–100% RH. Avoid prolonged overheating.
Lighting and UVB
Good plant lighting is useful. If UVB is provided, assess actual exposure at frog level, accounting for lamp type, distance, mesh, shade and enclosure structure; “gentle UVB” is not a measurable husbandry prescription by itself.
Feeding
Use appropriately sized live prey and a suitable supplementation programme. Monitor body condition and feeding access.
Live-Animal Husbandry Review
Last reviewed: 5 September 2026
Species suitability depends on adult size, behaviour, social structure, enclosure design, temperature, moisture, ventilation and the individual animals. Frogfather does not treat a fixed humidity percentage, enclosure size or group formula as a universal rule.
Mixed-species housing introduces additional risks including competition, predation, incompatible environmental needs, pathogen transfer and difficulty monitoring individual food intake. It is therefore not recommended merely because two species appear to use similar temperature or humidity ranges.
