Description

Fire Salamander – Salamandra salamandra (Captive Bred)

Captive-bred Fire Salamanders, a predominantly terrestrial European salamander associated with cool, shaded woodland habitats and moist terrestrial refuges.

Experience level

The earlier listing labelled this species “Beginner to Intermediate”. We have removed the beginner category. Fire Salamanders can be rewarding captives, but they require cool temperature management, good hygiene, appropriate live food and awareness of infectious-disease risks affecting European salamanders.

Temperature

Keep the enclosure on the cool side and avoid prolonged warming. The previous 14–22°C range is better treated as a broad practical bracket rather than an invitation to maintain animals near the upper end continuously. Provide cooler refuges and monitor the actual microclimate at salamander level.

Moisture and ventilation

Provide moist substrate, leaf litter, moss/cork refuges and useful ventilation. A fixed 70–90% RH number is not a complete husbandry prescription; animals need access to moist retreats without being held in stagnant saturated conditions.

Feeding

Offer a varied terrestrial invertebrate diet with earthworms as a useful component where appropriate. Use feeder supplementation according to the total diet and life stage.

Defensive skin secretions and handling

Fire Salamanders possess defensive skin glands and should be handled only when necessary. Wash hands after contact and avoid touching eyes or mouth. Use damp powder-free gloves or other suitable amphibian-handling practice when direct handling is unavoidable.

Biosecurity

European salamanders are vulnerable to serious infectious diseases including Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal). Quarantine new animals and avoid sharing wet equipment between salamander groups without appropriate disinfection.

Last reviewed: 5 September 2026. Beginner, fixed-RH and generic “clean-up crew keeps it clean” wording has been removed.
