Yellow Springtail Starter Culture with 50g Food
A live yellow springtail starter culture supplied with 50g of Frogfather springtail food for culture maintenance, vivarium seeding or careful harvesting as micro-prey.
Why use springtails?
Many springtails feed on fungi, microbes and decomposing organic material and can contribute to decomposition processes in damp bioactive substrates. They can also provide very small live prey for suitable froglets and micro-species.
We have changed the earlier “tackle mould and waste” wording because springtails are not a universal mould treatment or waste-disposal system. They may graze some fungal growth and organic residues, but enclosure hygiene still depends on appropriate feeding, ventilation, moisture management and removal of excess waste.

Care
Keep the culture suitably damp rather than flooded. Feed a small amount and wait for it to be consumed before adding more. Culture density and reproduction vary naturally, so allow the colony to establish before heavy harvesting.

Springtails are part of terrestrial decomposer food webs. Many species feed on fungi, microbes and decaying organic material, and microarthropods can contribute to decomposition. Their exact diet and ecological effect vary among taxa and conditions, so Frogfather does not describe a springtail culture as a complete waste-removal system or a guarantee of a stable, self-sustaining vivarium.
Bioactive enclosures still require observation, suitable substrate and leaf litter, moisture and ventilation management, animal feeding, plant care and removal of uneaten food or accumulated waste when necessary.
