Escudo Koi Dart Frogs (Oophaga pumilio “Escudo”) – Available Now | Limited Stock UK

Captive-bred Escudo-line Oophaga pumilio.

Territorial behaviour, obligate egg-feeding reproduction and species-specific social management make this a specialist frog. Captive-bred animals are not expected to carry the wild alkaloid profile, but we avoid absolute “non-toxic” wording.

Description

Escudo Koi Dart Frogs – Oophaga pumilio ‘Escudo’

Captive-bred Oophaga pumilio from Escudo de Veraguas lineage, known in the hobby for highly variable orange/red and dark patterning.

Behaviour

These are active, visually engaging frogs, but “territorial but manageable” is not a stocking rule. Adult O. pumilio can show strong territorial behaviour. Pair or group arrangements require careful enclosure design, multiple refuges and feeding areas, and close observation.

Environment

Provide dense planting, leaf litter, vertical structure and useful ventilation. The previous 75–95% RH figure should be treated as a broad husbandry observation, not a constant target. Monitor local moisture and animal behaviour as well as the hygrometer.

Breeding

Oophaga pumilio is an obligate egg-feeding poison frog: females provision tadpoles with trophic eggs. That makes breeding more specialised than simply providing an egg site, and successful reproduction is not guaranteed by pair/group formation.

Captive alkaloids

Captive-bred poison frogs raised on ordinary cultured feeder insects are not expected to develop the wild dietary alkaloid profile. We nevertheless avoid the absolute phrase “non-toxic”; normal hygiene and minimal handling remain sensible.

Feeding

Offer appropriately sized live prey with a suitable supplementation programme. Maintain more than one feeder culture so supply is not dependent on a single pot.

Live-Animal Husbandry Review

Last reviewed: 5 September 2026

Species suitability depends on adult size, behaviour, social structure, enclosure design, temperature, moisture, ventilation and the individual animals. Frogfather does not treat a fixed humidity percentage, enclosure size or group formula as a universal rule.

Mixed-species housing introduces additional risks including competition, predation, incompatible environmental needs, pathogen transfer and difficulty monitoring individual food intake. It is therefore not recommended merely because two species appear to use similar temperature or humidity ranges.
