Individual rearing
At Frogfather we commonly rear many dart frog tadpoles individually because it makes food intake, development and water quality easier to monitor and avoids interactions between larvae. This is a practical husbandry method, not a universal requirement for every amphibian species.
Water
Use water appropriate for the species and your local supply. Do not assume untreated reverse-osmosis water is automatically preferable simply because it is pure. Water mineral composition can matter to amphibian larvae, and published poison-frog work has linked water composition and supplementation with developmental outcomes.
Catappa leaf can release tannins and other compounds into the water and provides a surface on which biofilm and detritus can develop. We use it routinely in our own tadpole husbandry. We have removed earlier claims that catappa leaf tea is a proven water conditioner or that it reliably prevents harmful bacterial or fungal growth in tadpole containers; those claims are not sufficiently established for us to present them as fact.
Feeding and maintenance
Feed small amounts appropriate to the species, size and developmental stage, and adjust according to consumption and water condition. Remove excessive waste and use partial water changes when required rather than relying on a fixed universal schedule.
Tadpole diets are highly diverse across amphibians. Follow species-specific guidance, particularly for specialist feeders and obligate egg-feeding species.
