Description
The Frogfather Tadpole Deposition Pool – A Purpose-Designed Tadpole Drop-Off Point
Sometimes the simplest ideas come from watching what our frogs do naturally.
Here at Frogfather HQ, our Epipedobates anthonyi dart frogs have access to a long, shallow water trough at the front of their vivarium. Filled with prepared tadpole tea, it provides a convenient place for transporting adults to deposit their tadpoles.
Our Dendrobates leucomelas have a similar arrangement, and watching these frogs use their water features led to an interesting question: what about keepers who don’t have room for a built-in trough?
That’s where The Frogfather Tadpole Deposition Pool comes in.
Designed and 3D printed at Frogfather HQ, this compact, elongated water feature brings the idea of a dedicated tadpole deposition trough to smaller vivarium setups, without requiring a permanent water feature or a major rebuild.
Designed with Tadpole Transport in Mind
Unlike a conventional round water dish, the Tadpole Deposition Pool features a long, narrow footprint with integrated internal steps.
These stepped surfaces provide graduated access into and out of the water, giving adult frogs a route between the surrounding vivarium and the pool.
The elongated design creates a dedicated water area that can be positioned along the front or another accessible section of a suitable vivarium.
Key Features
- Purpose-designed for tadpole deposition: Provides a dedicated water feature for dart frogs that transport tadpoles.
- Integrated internal steps: Graduated access surfaces help adult frogs enter and leave the pool.
- Space-conscious footprint: A compact alternative to a permanent, built-in water trough.
- Elongated design: Provides a longer water area than a conventional small dish.
- Removable and repositionable: Can be placed within a suitable vivarium without constructing a permanent water feature.
- Designed and 3D printed at Frogfather HQ: Developed from observations of our own breeding dart frogs.
Suitable Species and Applications
The pool was developed primarily with Epipedobates anthonyi in mind, based on our experience of these frogs transporting tadpoles into a communal water feature.
It may also be useful for other dart frog species that deposit tadpoles into accessible bodies of water, including Dendrobates leucomelas, where appropriate for the species and breeding setup.
Not all dart frogs use communal deposition sites. Some species preferentially deposit tadpoles individually into small water-filled cavities, bromeliads or other phytotelmata. This product should therefore be selected according to the natural breeding behaviour of the species being kept.
Product Dimensions
- Length: 15 cm
- Width: 5 cm
- Height: 5 cm
- Design: Elongated water trough with integrated internal steps
- Manufacture: 3D printed
All measurements are approximate external dimensions. The usable water depth and volume depend on the internal geometry and fill level.
Using Your Tadpole Deposition Pool
Position the pool securely on a stable, level surface within the vivarium, ensuring that adult frogs can reach the stepped access points without jumping or falling into deep water.
Fill with suitable prepared water. Where appropriate, a species-specific tadpole tea may be used, provided that its ingredients and water chemistry are suitable for the animals.
Keep the pool accessible and monitor it regularly for tadpole deposition, water quality and hygiene.
Important: A communal deposition pool is not necessarily a suitable long-term rearing container. Depending on the species, tadpoles may require separation, additional feeding, monitoring or individual rearing arrangements. Tadpole predation and cannibalism can occur in some dart frog species.
Developed from Real Breeding Experience
This wasn’t designed simply because we thought it might look interesting in a vivarium.
It came about because our own dart frogs were already using a dedicated water trough, and fellow keepers wanted to know more about the setup after seeing our Epipedobates anthonyi transporting their tadpoles.
We wanted to make that idea more accessible to people who don’t have the space or inclination to build a permanent trough into their vivarium.
The result is a straightforward, practical addition to the breeding vivarium, designed around observed frog behaviour.
