Description

Monstera adansonii – Monkey Mask Rooted Terrarium Plant

Monstera adansonii, commonly known as the Monkey Mask Monstera, is an excellent choice for creating a lush, established rainforest appearance in a tropical or bioactive vivarium.

Its distinctive green leaves develop natural oval openings known as fenestrations, giving the plant its unmistakable appearance. Rather than simply filling space at substrate level, Monstera adansonii is a natural climber that can grow upwards through hardscape and across suitable backgrounds, helping to make use of the vertical space within a planted enclosure.

Supplied as a Rooted Cutting

Our Monstera adansonii is supplied as a rooted cutting, giving you an established young plant ready to continue growing once planted into a suitable substrate.

As with all live plants, every cutting is individual. Leaf size, shape, number of leaves, root development and the amount of fenestration will naturally vary. Product photographs are therefore representative of the plant and its growth habit rather than the exact cutting you will receive.

Why We Like Monstera adansonii for Vivariums

  • Natural rainforest appearance – instantly adds recognisable tropical foliage to an enclosure.
  • Climbing growth habit – excellent for making use of vertical space in taller vivariums.
  • Aerial roots – can establish against suitable backgrounds, cork and natural hardscape.
  • Humidity loving – particularly well suited to warm, humid planted environments.
  • Easy to manage – vigorous growth can be pruned back when required.
  • Distinctive foliage – naturally fenestrated leaves provide texture and visual interest within a planted display.

Planting in a Bioactive Vivarium

Plant the rooted section into a moist but free-draining substrate, taking care not to bury the stem or crown unnecessarily deeply.

Monstera adansonii naturally wants to climb, so positioning it close to cork bark, branches, wood or a suitable textured background gives its developing aerial roots something to explore and attach to. Alternatively, it can be allowed to trail.

Provide bright, indirect light, warmth and good humidity while avoiding permanently waterlogged substrate. Once established, new growth can be directed around the enclosure or trimmed to maintain the desired shape.

How Large Does It Grow?

This is not a miniature foreground plant. Given the right conditions, Monstera adansonii can grow vigorously and is therefore particularly useful in medium to larger tropical displays where it has space to climb.

In smaller vivariums it can still be grown successfully, but expect to prune it periodically to prevent it from overwhelming slower-growing plants. Regular pruning also makes it easy to shape the plant around your hardscape.

Also Suitable as a Houseplant

You don’t need a vivarium to grow it. Monstera adansonii also makes an attractive tropical houseplant and can be trained up a suitable support or allowed to trail.

Important Information

You are purchasing a live, rooted plant cutting. Individual plants naturally vary in size, leaf shape, root development and appearance. Safety: Monstera contains calcium oxalate crystals and should not be consumed. Keep away from animals likely to deliberately consume foliage and from children or pets where ingestion is possible.

I ordered three Santa Isabels from Tony on the 8th of August (my birthday) the moment the email came to say they'd become available again 😊 They were personally delivered by the great Frogfather himself yesterday, just two days later, on the 10th, which was a lovely surprise and it was so very nice to meet Tony in person! The Santa's looked beautifully healthy and super cute, were packed very well and kept moist in their own transport tub. They are incredibly sweet 💙 I was also thrilled to receive a very generous care package and care sheet for the darts, and lots of good advice from Tony! Again very unexpected but most welcome. In all, a fantastic experience buying frogs from the Frogfather and I'm sure I'll be back for more soon! Cheers Tony!

His knowledge is second to none and I would highly recommend anyone who wants to get started speak to the Frogfather first and use the course material provided on the website.

Absolutely epic customer service from this company. We've placed a few orders with them previously and always been very happy with the quality and service. This time round, I placed the order (knowing I was approaching last minute ordering!) and got in touch to let them know I was happy to pay for express shipping if there was anything they could do to help me. A couple of very friendly and helpful messages later from Tony, and the parcel landed on my desk in less than 24 hours. Customer service like this is a breath of fresh air these days and very much appreciated. If you're considering purchasing from these guys, no need to hesitate. Fantastic product offering and competitive prices. I run an invert business, and I'm now seriously contemplating the need for frogs in my life. Cheers Frogfather! :)

Got my D.Leucs & Mourning Geckos from Tony who is a standout guy, when a frog arrived sickly and I messaged him on Whatsapp he assisted me in the process of trying to help them. Other frogs and geckos arrived safely and are now thriving in my care for some months. Will be buying more from him in the future. Hope to see you at an expo in the future!

🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸 I honestly can’t recommend Tony enough. My mum recently lost her beloved frog and was absolutely devastated. Tony was so kind and supportive throughout the whole situation. He took the time to explain what may have happened, reassured her not to blame herself, and answered all of our questions with so much patience and knowledge. We ended up getting a beautiful adult Azureus from him, along with a stunning vivarium, and my mum is absolutely over the moon. You can tell Tony genuinely cares about his frogs and wants them to go to the best possible homes. The frogs are clearly very well cared for, and his knowledge is incredible. Nothing ever felt rushed or like a sales pitch — he was just genuinely helpful from start to finish. Thank you, Tony, for all your kindness and help. We now have a very happy frog mum again! 🐸
