Description

Commission a Custom Bioactive Vivarium Without the Cost of Bespoke Glasswork

A custom bioactive vivarium does not always require a completely bespoke Euro-style enclosure.

For tree frogs, geckos and many other tropical species, a high-quality off-the-shelf glass terrarium can provide excellent ventilation, practical equipment access and plenty of usable climbing space while costing considerably less than commissioning a handmade glass enclosure.

We source a suitable commercially manufactured terrarium in your chosen size and transform it into a completely unique, mature bioactive habitat designed around its intended inhabitants.

The enclosure may be off the shelf, but the interior certainly is not.

Every background is individually built and carved. Wood, cork, planting, climbing routes, hides, ledges, feeding areas and equipment are positioned specifically for the animals that will live inside it.

Off-the-Shelf Terrarium or Custom Euro Vivarium?

Neither style is automatically better. The right choice depends on the species you intend to keep.

Why Choose an Off-the-Shelf Glass Terrarium?

Commercial glass terrariums normally have a large mesh top and generous front ventilation. This increased airflow can be extremely beneficial for tree frogs, geckos and other species that require good ventilation or a more pronounced humidity cycle.

They are also designed to accommodate lighting, UVB, heating, misting tubes and monitoring equipment easily. Their standardised construction makes replacement tops, lighting canopies and accessories more readily available.

Most importantly, using a manufactured enclosure avoids the additional cost of commissioning completely bespoke glasswork. This allows more of your budget to be invested in the planting, hardscape, lighting and biological quality of the finished habitat.

When Is a Euro Vivarium the Better Choice?

Custom Euro vivariums are particularly valuable for dart frogs and other very small amphibians fed on fruit flies and similarly tiny feeder insects.

They can be made with fine insect-resistant ventilation, close-fitting doors and carefully controlled airflow. This considerably reduces escaped fruit flies and helps maintain the stable humid conditions required by many dart frog species.

Those exceptionally tight tolerances are not necessary for every animal. Tree frogs and most geckos eat larger feeder insects, making ultra-fine fruit-fly containment much less important. Many of these species also benefit from the additional ventilation provided by a mesh-topped commercial terrarium.

We will always recommend the enclosure style that best suits the intended inhabitants rather than automatically directing every customer towards the more expensive option.

A Genuinely Collaborative Design Process

This is not a standard decorated terrarium selected from a shelf. You will be involved throughout the design and build.

We begin by agreeing the intended inhabitants, enclosure size, equipment requirements and preferred visual style. As the interior develops, we work together through photographs, videos, calls and messages to finalise:

  • The overall layout and visual style
  • Background shape, texture and carving
  • Cork, branch and natural wood placement
  • Plant choices and planting positions
  • Climbing routes, resting ledges and usable surfaces
  • Hides, feeding areas and breeding locations
  • Water areas or moving-water features, where appropriate
  • Lighting, UVB, misting, heating and monitoring equipment

The result is a unique habitat designed for your animals, your available space and the appearance you want to achieve.

What Is Included?

Suitable Glass Terrarium

Your commission includes a high-quality off-the-shelf glass terrarium in your selected size.

We may source the enclosure from different established manufacturers or UK reptile retailers depending on availability and value. Where more than one suitable model is available, we will confirm the proposed enclosure with you before purchasing it.

If you require a particular manufacturer or model, please tell us before ordering.

Hand-Built Bioactive Interior

Every interior is individually constructed rather than assembled from a fixed template. The background, hardscape and planting are designed around the dimensions of the enclosure and the natural behaviour of its future inhabitants.

Aged Bioactive Substrate

We maintain substantial quantities of aged bioactive substrate containing established organic matter, beneficial microorganisms and microfauna.

Using aged substrate gives the enclosure a significant biological head start. However, the completed vivarium must still be allowed to settle while its drainage, lighting, misting, plants and environmental conditions are tested.

Complete Microfauna Clean-Up Crew

Every commissioned vivarium is seeded with:

  • Mixed tropical springtails
  • Tropical white woodlice
  • Grindal worms
  • Additional beneficial organisms already present within the aged substrate

These organisms help consume decaying plant matter, fungal growth and organic waste while recycling nutrients through the substrate.

Premium Tropical Leaf Litter

Every build includes a functional layer of premium tropical leaf litter. This provides cover, foraging opportunities and protected humid areas while supporting the clean-up crew living beneath it.

Live Tropical Plants

Plants are selected according to the enclosure’s dimensions, lighting, airflow, humidity and intended inhabitants.

Your planting may include climbing and trailing plants, bromeliads, ferns, mosses, orchids, ground-cover plants and larger feature specimens. You will be able to discuss preferred colours, textures and individual plants during the build.

Available Enclosure Sizes

Our core off-the-shelf enclosure sizes are:

  • 45 × 45 × 60 cm: A compact, vertically orientated enclosure suitable for smaller arboreal species.
  • 60 × 45 × 45 cm: A wider enclosure suitable for terrestrial or horizontally orientated species.
  • 60 × 45 × 60 cm: A versatile general-purpose enclosure offering both floor area and climbing height.
  • 90 × 45 × 90 cm: A substantial arboreal enclosure for larger tree frogs, geckos and compatible groups where appropriate.

Suitability depends upon the species, number and sex of the intended inhabitants. Please contact us if you are unsure which size to choose.

Other commercially available sizes may be sourced by quotation.

Supply Your Own Enclosure

You may also provide your own new or used glass terrarium for conversion.

The enclosure must be delivered to us clean, structurally sound and suitable for the intended animals. Used enclosures must be thoroughly emptied and disinfected before arrival.

We will inspect the enclosure before beginning work. We cannot build into an enclosure with damaged glass, failed seals, unsuitable ventilation or other defects that could affect animal welfare or the integrity of the finished vivarium.

Please contact us before ordering if you would like us to use an enclosure you already own.

Natural Mould During the Settling Period

New wood, cork and other natural materials can develop a temporary white fungal or mould bloom when first introduced to a warm, humid environment.

This is a normal part of establishing many bioactive vivariums. Springtails, woodlice and other microfauna feed on the growth, which usually diminishes naturally as the enclosure settles.

Build Time, Collection and Local Delivery

Our normal build time is approximately four to six weeks. Particularly large or complex projects may take longer, but this will be discussed before work begins.

Completed bioactive vivariums are heavy, delicate and contain live plants, matured substrate and established microfauna. They cannot safely be sent through a conventional national parcel network.

  • Collection: Nottingham
  • Local delivery: £30 within approximately 50 miles of Nottingham
  • National parcel delivery: Not available

Commission Your Bioactive Vivarium

If you are uncertain whether an off-the-shelf terrarium or custom Euro vivarium would be best, contact us before ordering.

We will consider the species, enclosure size, ventilation, feeder insects, humidity, lighting and available budget before recommending the most appropriate option.

Your animals’ welfare comes first. You will never be encouraged to pay for bespoke glasswork unless it provides a genuine practical benefit.
