Selaginella sp. ‘Bronze’ – Bronze Spikemoss
A compact Selaginella-type plant with green, olive, bronze and brown tones for humid planted terrariums.
What it is
Selaginella is a vascular lycophyte commonly called a spikemoss; it is not a true moss. “Bronze” is retained as the horticultural/hobby name and the “sp.” indicates that Frogfather is not claiming a confirmed species identification.
Growing conditions
- Light: low to medium indirect/filtered light.
- Moisture: keep consistently moist while avoiding persistent waterlogging.
- Humidity: favours humid conditions but should not be sold with a universal fixed RH prescription.
- Airflow: useful air movement is beneficial in humid enclosures.
Colour
Foliage colour can vary with genetics, lighting, hydration, growth stage and age. Bronze or copper tones are not guaranteed to remain identical under every lighting system.
Animal-enclosure use
It can provide low-level visual cover in suitable planted vivariums. Prepare nursery-grown plants appropriately before use with sensitive amphibians rather than assuming species identity alone establishes safety.

Plant performance depends on the individual species or cultivar, root condition, light, substrate, watering, ventilation and temperature. Frogfather therefore avoids presenting one fixed relative-humidity range as a universal requirement or calling a plant automatically “safe” for amphibians simply because the species is commonly used in vivariums.
For sensitive amphibian enclosures, plants should be inspected and prepared to minimise pesticide, fertiliser and propagation-product residues before introduction.
