Selaginella sp. ‘Serpentine’ – Rooted Cutting

A creeping Selaginella supplied as a rooted cutting for humid terrarium planting. Selaginella is a vascular spikemoss/clubmoss relative, not a true moss.

Identification

The “sp.” in the product name is intentional. Frogfather is not claiming a confirmed species-level identification for the ‘Serpentine’ plant unless future botanical verification becomes available.

Growing conditions

• Light: low to medium filtered/indirect light.
• Moisture: keep the rooting medium consistently moist but avoid persistent waterlogging.
• Humidity: high humidity is often useful for Selaginella, but a constant 80–100% RH target is not required or scientifically established for this unidentified form.
• Airflow: provide useful air circulation in humid conditions.
• Temperature: use suitable warm indoor/terrarium conditions and adjust from plant response rather than treating 20–27°C as a precise universal optimum.

Growth rate

A rooted cutting may establish more reliably than an unrooted piece, but “much faster” establishment is not guaranteed. Growth depends on root condition, light, water, substrate and temperature.

Animal-enclosure use

It can be used as planted cover in appropriate animal vivariums, but “suitable for dart frogs” does not itself prove a plant is residue-free. Inspect and prepare plants to minimise pesticide/fertiliser exposure before use with sensitive amphibians.
