Bioactive Terrarium & Vivarium Background Clay
A mouldable clay-based background material for creating natural-looking planting surfaces, pockets, ledges and textured areas in planted vivariums and terrariums.
Why use a clay-based background?
- Can be applied only where required rather than filling the whole background with expanding foam.
- Can be hand-shaped into pockets, ledges and irregular naturalistic contours.
- Provides a moisture-holding mineral surface for suitable mosses and plants.
- Avoids the carving stage associated with many expanding-foam builds.
Animal-safety wording corrected
Earlier wording described the material as “dart frog safe” simply because it has no volatile curing stage. Absence of solvent fumes is not, by itself, evidence that a material is harmless to amphibians. Amphibian skin is highly permeable, so composition, dissolved residues, loose particles and water runoff all matter.
Frogfather uses this clay-based material in our own planted builds. That is practical husbandry experience rather than a formal toxicological safety test.
Before adding animals
- Build and plant the background before introducing amphibians.
- Allow the finished background to become physically stable.
- Remove loose material and inspect runoff or standing water for suspended residue.
- Confirm that the structure remains attached under the enclosure’s normal misting regime.
- Do not mix additional fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides or other chemicals into the material for an amphibian enclosure.
Plants and nutrients
The blend contains mineral/plant-support ingredients intended to assist planted establishment. We have removed the claim that this automatically makes plants establish “more successfully than inert foam”; plant success depends on species, lighting, moisture, rooting behaviour and overall husbandry.
Does it cure?
This is not a solvent-curing silicone or expanding foam. It sets through its physical clay-based structure rather than a volatile chemical cure. Even so, give a completed animal enclosure a settling and inspection period before livestock are introduced.

Amphibian skin is highly permeable and the absorption of chemicals can differ markedly between species and body regions. For that reason, Frogfather avoids describing products as generically “frog-safe” merely because they are natural, chemical-free, low-odour or free of volatile solvents. Direct-contact products and residues should be minimised unless their composition and intended amphibian use are known.
