FREE Exo Terra Push-On Mesh Guard – 3D Printable STL Download
At Frogfather HQ, we’re constantly experimenting with practical ways to improve our vivariums, make routine maintenance easier and develop useful accessories for the amphibian and reptile-keeping community.
Our Exo Terra Push-On Mesh Guard is another example of a simple idea turned into a practical 3D-printable design, and we’re making the STL available to download completely free of charge.
Designed to push onto compatible Exo Terra mesh ventilation sections, the guard provides an additional protective mesh barrier without requiring adhesives or permanent modifications to the enclosure.
Why We Designed It
Working with dart frogs, geckos, live food cultures and bioactive vivariums means paying close attention to ventilation openings and the small gaps that can exist around enclosure fittings.
We wanted a straightforward, removable accessory that could provide an additional barrier whilst retaining airflow through the existing mesh ventilation area.
Rather than permanently altering the enclosure, our design uses a push-on fitting that can be removed for cleaning, inspection or replacement.
As with many of our designs, it started as something useful for our own setups at Frogfather HQ. We’re now sharing the STL so other keepers can print their own.
Key Features
- Push-on installation: Designed to fit compatible Exo Terra mesh ventilation sections without adhesives or permanent modification.
- Two-piece construction: The supplied design consists of two separate 30 cm sections for a nominal 60 cm vivarium.
- Adjustable dimensions: The STL can be resized in compatible slicing software to accommodate variations between enclosures.
- Mesh-style protective barrier: Designed to provide an additional barrier whilst retaining ventilation.
- Removable and reusable: Convenient for routine cleaning, inspection and maintenance.
- 3D-printable: Produce your own replacement or spare using a suitable 3D printer.
- Completely FREE: Shared with the community as part of our ongoing Frogfather design projects.
Important – STL Dimensions and Vivarium Compatibility
Please read this section before printing.
The downloadable STL has been designed around a 60 cm Exo Terra vivarium and is supplied in two separate 30 cm sections.
However, we’ve found that not all Exo Terra mesh ventilation sections are precisely identical in their dimensions. Small manufacturing differences and variations between enclosure models can affect how securely a push-on accessory fits.
For this reason, we strongly recommend taking your own measurements before printing.
- Measure your vivarium: Carefully measure the mesh section and the area where the guard will be fitted.
- Open the STL in your slicer: Import the supplied files into your preferred 3D-printing software.
- Adjust the dimensions: Amend the length and/or height to suit your particular vivarium, taking care to preserve the intended fitting geometry.
- Check the fit: Ideally, print a small test section before committing to the complete print.
- Install securely: Ensure that the finished guard fits snugly, without forcing it into position, damaging the existing mesh or leaving unwanted gaps.
Please note: The supplied 30 cm sections are starting dimensions rather than a guarantee of universal compatibility. A snug fit is particularly important where small animals or live food insects are present.
3D Printing Recommendations
We recommend PETG as a practical starting material for vivarium accessories because of its moisture resistance and suitability for many humid environments.
As print quality and dimensional accuracy vary between printers, we recommend:
- Using appropriately calibrated printer and slicer settings.
- Checking the model dimensions before starting your print.
- Maintaining sufficient wall strength for the intended application.
- Inspecting the finished print for sharp edges, rough surfaces or loose material.
- Checking that mesh openings remain clear and unobstructed.
- Testing the fit before using the guard with animals or live food.
When adjusting dimensions in your slicer, remember that excessive scaling may alter the thickness of the fitting surfaces or the size of the mesh openings. Always inspect the final print carefully.
What You’ll Receive
- Digital STL files for the Frogfather Exo Terra Push-On Mesh Guard.
- A two-section design, nominally 30 cm per section, intended for a 60 cm vivarium.
- Files that can be resized in compatible slicing software to suit your enclosure.
- A completely free digital download for personal 3D printing.
This is a digital product. No physical mesh guard or printed accessory will be posted. You will need access to a suitable 3D printer and slicing software.
Compatibility and Safety
This product is an independently designed Frogfather accessory and is not manufactured, endorsed or supplied by Exo Terra.
Whilst designed around an Exo Terra enclosure, compatibility is dependent on the actual dimensions and construction of your vivarium.
Always check that the printed guard:
- Fits securely without excessive force.
- Does not damage or distort the existing ventilation mesh.
- Does not significantly restrict the airflow required by the animals.
- Has no sharp edges or loose components.
- Cannot easily become dislodged during routine maintenance.
Do not rely on this accessory as the sole escape-prevention measure for small animals or feeder insects. Inspect the fitting regularly, particularly in enclosures where humidity and temperature fluctuate.
Why We Share Our STL Designs for Free
Many of our Frogfather products begin as small experiments intended to solve everyday problems in our own frog rooms.
Some eventually become finished physical products. Others are simple designs that we think fellow keepers might enjoy printing and experimenting with themselves.
We believe that sharing practical ideas, encouraging experimentation and helping other hobbyists is an important part of keeping the hobby moving forward.
That’s why we make selected STL designs available completely free of charge.
