Husbandry & Evidence Review – 5 September 2026
This older care sheet has been aligned with Frogfather’s current temperature, humidity, feeding, supplementation and water guidance. Fixed 70–100% RH and product-independent supplement schedules have been removed.
Introduction
Dendrobates Leucomelas, commonly known as the Bumblebee Dart Frog, is a visually striking amphibian native to the tropical rainforests of Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil. Recognized by their vibrant yellow and black coloration, these frogs are popular in the pet trade. This care sheet provides detailed guidelines on the care of adult Bumblebee Dart Frogs, covering their behavior, temperature, feeding, hiding spaces, and water absorption.
Behavior
- Activity Level: Bumblebee Dart Frogs are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. They are generally bold and active, often seen exploring their enclosure.
- Social structure: compatible D. leucomelas groups can work in suitable enclosures, but group housing is not automatically conflict-free. Consider sex ratio, usable space and individual behaviour.
- Handling: Avoid handling these frogs as much as possible. Their skin is delicate and can absorb harmful substances from human hands.
Temperature
- Temperature: use the current species-specific temperature guide and measure the enclosure at frog level. Avoid applying one 24–27°C daytime target to every animal or room.
- Nighttime Temperature: Allow the temperature to drop slightly at night, ideally between 65°F and 70°F (18°C – 21°C).
- Heating: Use a thermostat-controlled heat source, such as an under-tank heater or a low-wattage heat bulb, only if the enclosure is in a particularly cool place, to maintain consistent temperatures.
- Monitoring: Regularly monitor the temperature using a digital thermometer placed at both the warm and cool ends of the enclosure.
Feeding
- Diet: Adult Bumblebee Dart Frogs primarily feed on small invertebrates. In captivity, their diet includes:
- Fruit Flies: The primary food source. Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei are commonly used.
- Pinhead Crickets: Occasionally offered for variety.
- Springtails and Isopods: These can be included in a bioactive setup to provide additional food sources and help maintain the enclosure.
- Feeding frequency: adjust to life stage, prey size, intake and body condition rather than a fixed daily/every-other-day rule.
- Supplements: use one coherent supplementation system and follow the exact product directions. Do not automatically combine calcium+D3 at every feed with an additional multivitamin once or twice weekly.
Hiding Spaces
- Importance: Providing adequate hiding spaces is crucial to reduce stress and mimic their natural habitat.
- Types of Hiding Spots:
- Cork Bark and Driftwood: These natural materials create excellent hiding spots and climbing opportunities.
- Live Plants: Plants like bromeliads, ferns, and pothos provide shelter and help maintain humidity.
- Leaf Litter: A layer of leaf litter on the substrate offers additional hiding places and foraging opportunities.
Water Absorption
- Moisture and humidity: provide humid refuges, appropriate surface moisture and useful ventilation rather than maintaining a permanent 70–100% RH target.
- Misting: adjust frequency/duration to enclosure drying, ventilation, drainage and room conditions rather than a universal 1–2-times-daily schedule.
- Water: provide species-appropriate clean water/moisture access. Distilled water is not automatically the preferred animal-contact water; choose water chemistry for the intended use.
- Absorption: Dendrobates Leucomelas absorb water through their skin, so it’s crucial to maintain a humid environment. A moist substrate, such as a mix of coco fiber and sphagnum moss, will aid in maintaining necessary humidity levels.
Additional Tips
- Lighting: Provide a light cycle of 12 hours on and 12 hours off to mimic natural daylight. Use a low-wattage bulb to avoid overheating the enclosure.
- Substrate: Use a substrate that retains moisture well, such as a mix of coconut fiber, sphagnum moss, and leaf litter.
- Cleanliness: Regularly clean the enclosure to prevent the buildup of waste and mold. Spot clean daily and perform a thorough cleaning monthly.
By following these guidelines, you can ensure a healthy and thriving environment for your adult Dendrobates Leucomelas. Proper care will allow you to enjoy the beauty and fascinating behavior of these vibrant amphibians for many years.
