Description

About the Species:

The Bumblebee Dart Frog originates from the lush rainforests of South America, primarily Venezuela, Guyana, and Brazil. It is a terrestrial species that thrives in humid, tropical environments. Fully grown adults reach an average size of 3.5-5 cm and are one of the most popular dart frog species due to their ease of care and vibrant appearance.

Key Features:

  • Size: Netted adults, 3.5-5 cm.
  • Lifespan: 10-15 years in captivity with proper care.
  • Diet: Small live prey such as flightless fruit flies, springtails, and pinhead crickets.
  • Behavior: Active, bold, and highly visible in their habitat.
  • Care Level: Beginner-friendly; ideal for those starting with dart frogs.

Habitat Requirements:

Create a comfortable and natural environment to keep your Bumblebee Dart Frog healthy and happy:

  1. Vivarium Size:
Minimum 45x45x45 cm for a pair or small group. Larger enclosures allow for more enrichment.
  2. Humidity:
Maintain humidity levels between 80-100%. Use a misting system or mist the vivarium 1-2 times daily.
  3. Temperature:
Maintain daytime temperatures between 22-26°C and nighttime drops to 18-22°C. Avoid temperatures exceeding 29°C.
  4. Lighting:
Use low to moderate lighting to replicate natural daylight. UVB is optional but can support plant growth and frog health.
  5. Substrate:
Use a bioactive substrate such as ABG mix topped with leaf litter. This setup supports plant growth and humidity retention.
  6. Plants and Décor:
Incorporate tropical plants like bromeliads, philodendrons, and ferns. Add moss, branches, and hiding spots to mimic their natural habitat.
  7. Water:
Provide a shallow water dish or maintain water in the drainage layer for consistent humidity.
  8. Cleaning Crew:
Add isopods and springtails to establish a bioactive ecosystem.
